I need to replace my 35ish year old Profurl unit which has given good service but the lower drum bearing is coming apart. I am considering replacing with the modern equivalent (Profurl C290), I can see from the literature that the new version has a locking mechanism as a component of the drum. How is this locking mechanism utilised in day to day use of the furler?

It's an extra cost option, I believe, you don't have to have it.

I’m not sure what kind of furler is on my boat but it sounds similar. The lock is engaged on the furler by pushing a small lever from the free to the lock position. I’ve never used it and understand that the idea is to lock it when on a long, multiday passage or to lock the sail away an prevent it unfurling when the boat is left for extended periods.

Fitting new bearings is within the scope of the vaguely competent and a tad cheaper than a new furler.

Funny that, someone told me it was virtually impossible. But I think he was on the scrounge and wanted mine for parts, the swine.

How did you ascertain the correct sizes of the bearing and circlips? Mine are too far gone to measure accurately.

Dimensions needed are bearing outside and inside diameters, and width. Hopefully you have enough bearing left to measure width. Measure groove diameter and width for circlip and whether internal or external. Then Ebay is your friend.

In your case, though, you would be better scrapping it and giving away the remnants to a deserving cause, say an impecunious OAP.

Just noticed you are reasonably local - if you do decide to scrap it, I would be interested in salvaging the foil. Mine has developed a terminal crack.
