Product recommendation: Ikea LED cabin lights

This looks interesting. I bought 2 lights of this type at SBS from Toomer and Hayter's stand. They are very bright but consume 1 amp at 12 volts each which is surprisingly high 12W.
I also bought a decking lighting system from Screwfix which was similar but the individual lights were a bit too dim for me to do the Sudoku in bed.
The Tomer etc ones were £15 each which is double the IKEA unit cost.
The Toomer ones were pretty bright, Difficult to look at in an SBS tent with sunlight shining through.

B & Q

do something similar. However there's a little nagging doubt as to whether they're AC at 12v or DC. Can't remember but it's worth checking.

Re: B & Q

LED lights will be DC, fine for boats (well we have a 50% chance), not for use with the mains 'transformers' intended for halogens.
How bright are they? How deep?- my boat has marginal headroom
Cheers,

Re: Product recommendation: Ikea LED cabin lights BUT mind the colour

I have just installed similar LEADs from IKEA, but not the circular ones but the long and narrow ones. They have been wired in series (stb side ande port side both 8 units parallel, but stbd and port in series) because we have a 24 volt system. This works, but we have to see for how long, as the voltage is not stabilised and could get up to over 27 Volts while charging...

I dyed the surface of the units with glass dye, dark brown, which brings the colour of the LEDs back to more or less warm white. I can't stand the original colour, very cold light.

I know in the UK there are many warm white LEDs available, here in teh Netherlands they are still virtually non-existent.

cheers

Re: B & Q

Why not use the 'Dot-it' Leds lights:

They use batteries (which last for thousands of hours) - so are great if you loose all your electric system etc!

We have some, and painted the lenses with red nail varnish - perfect for night lighting in the galley / nav station!

Other advantage for these - no cables to run - just stick them anywhere (even outside).
