I came across the Mini Opera browser on these forums and used it extensively on my phone this summer to access met office weather (inshore waters forecast) when I needed it. In September the browser would no longer work with the Orange WAP GPRS service. An e-mail to Orange didn't help, so I searched the Opera forums. The problem apparently is down to the default Safeguard setting on Orange accounts. This is set as ON. This prevents a third-party browser accessing the web as Orange can't control 18+ sites that could be accessed. Get this turned OFF either on-line or through customer service and the browser works perfectly! I'm delighted to have found the solution and thought I'd pass it on here in the PBO forum. I don't know if this happens with other mobile services also, but if you've been using Opera and it no longer works, then try the same approach. Hope this helps.

Interesting. I have been having this sort of problem with a Motorola phone, Virgin mobile and Tiscali - but cannot get any of the three to admit to being the culprit in turning down my attempts to log on.

I can get Virgin Mobile Bytes - which are just kiddie advertorial bull sh*t. But any attempt to download my e mail by using the phones e mail client and dialling in on the pay as you go line gets rejected too.

Any suggestions?

Can't really suggest anything specific...but maybe buy an Orange PAYG SIM for £1, add a 4MB data bundle for £4 , get Safeguard turned off, and have a go with a different network! I had a look at Virgin Mobile as an Orange alternative and got the impression that it wasn't seriously into GPRS services (but I'm ready to be shot down on this!)

Orange also do unlimited GPRS, (not 3G), for £1 per day... you have to order it each day.

T Mobile do unlimited GPRS or 3G for £1 per day... you just use it and once the cost goes over £1 in a day, they charge no more.. also their EVERYONE tariff costs 12p per minute for all UK calls.

I think the T Mobile SIM is the best PAYG deal at the moment, but would stand corrected.

I can't download my emails from Tiscali or access much of the web using a mobile on o2 PAYG Pay As You Go). I had assumed it was because it was PAYG. Is it likely that that it may be and optional block that I can have removed or is a network policy? It would be good to use GPRS instead of dial up to access my emails and the web whilst on the boat.

Can anyone on o2 PAYG access their email accounts with another provider? I think I did talk to o2 about this but was told it was not possible on PAYG, I may be mistajken though.

Dont know if it's O2, may be worth calling them.

Having said that, I have had a contract with them for over 10 years and have never been able to do the internet very well with them.. they also seem to be very slow at coming forward with new incentives and, as a result, I found Orange World £1 per day for GPRS and now T-Mobile Web n Walk GPRS & 3G for £1 per day, both on PAYG.

Also the WIND SIM for roaming internet, although they dont seem to be able to accept my credit cards this month.....

So, having been a loyal customer for years, O2 have lost me at a time when my expenditure is likely to be at its' highest.

I guess what I am saying is that it might be time to look for a different provider?

usually you can set email accounts to forward emails to an account of yr choosing, so it shouldn't really matter whether O2 let you check other emails or not.

I've used the Orange £1 per day option if lots of surfing planned. The problem is that if you just download say 50-100kb every day (weather forecast) it's very pricey. That's when the 4MB bundle that lasts a month comes in. I've been looking at T-Mobile PAYG today as offering the best call rates and a GPRS option of max £1 per day (but less for small downloads). I'll probably give it a try in parallel with Orange for a while.
