Took quite a number of photos on the Isle of Man. They did take ok because I was able to view them in the camera. When I got home I went to download them but without success. Unable to view them in the camera, all it said was ‘unable to use card’. Can anyone offer any suggestions, or have I lost the photos for good?

Apologies for the non boaty thread (although there were some nice pics of Peel harbour).

try taking the card out completely and re-inserting and see what occurs.

If that fails put into a card reader. (I always have to borrow one from a friend)

I wont be able to answer the question but it would be sensible to give the camera make and model. perhaps also the card details.

battery charged card fitted ok ?

have you tried down loading from the card with a card reader or just from the camera?

This seems common. We were advised to buy two cards and change over periodically, or when they were half full. We also got that message at one point, so put new card in then, after a bit, put old card back in and all was fine.

It’s a Minolta Dimage 7 camera with a 256mb compact flash card. As suggested, I have put the card in a reader but the computer does not recognise it – it just keeps saying ‘insert a disc in drive’. I have a spare card which works fine in the camera and the reader.

I have just come across a programme on the web called ‘Don’t Panic Photo Recovery’ but I suppose that is not a lot of use if I cannot access the card?

My camera has internal memory as well as a card. If the card is in the camera it photos are saved to it, otherwise to the internal memory. However you can only see the photos in the internal memory when the card is not in the camera.

If your camera works the same way maybe the photos are in the internal memory.

If there is a fault with the card it will be the directory written on the card every time you take a shot that is inaccessible.
The recovery programmes mentioned will access the data and recover it without having to read the directory.

Also, have a look at the side-edge of the card, there'll be a "lock/unlock" tab. Maybe you "locked" it accidentally,
& the computer will not see the card as a 'Drive' at all then.

[/ QUOTE ] Is that fact? I always assumed it would be like the locks on the old floppies, just prevent writing but allow reading.
I'll darned well try it next time I put the card in the reader.

VicS...actually you're right mate!

I've done a quick check with my own camera here & with the card tab "locked" the camera reads what's on the card already but will not take further photo's.

I seem to remember now that I transferred some photo's to a USB memory-stick which was partitioned & I forgot about the protection-lock on 1 partition, which was where the photo's were stored. My computer wouldn't read that partition. Took me about an Hour to figure it out. Much relief.

I suspect that Redboat has the correct answer.
