Problem with Smev 2 burner combo & sink

Hi!
I have just found the forum and joined.
I wondering if anyone can help me with a problem.
I have a Smev 2 burner cooker/sink combo.
The problem I have is when I release the control the flame goes out on the larger of the 2 burners. Very rarely can I release the control without extinguishing the flame.
Needless to say the problem is driving me mad.
If anyone could shed light as to why this is happening. I would be most grateful.

Welcome to the forum.
Sounds like the flame failure device, if it is not held in the flame , it will shut off the gas. they do fail after a while. sure somebody will be along in a bit to tell you how to change it.

What is strange here is that the burners have been used no more than half a dozen times for test purposes only since I have had the boat. I have shore power and use electric to boil the kettle.

I am planning a trip to Alderney from Plymouth in the summer and it occured to me that connecting up the gas would be sensible and testing the burners would be a good idea.

This is when i found the problem.

The unit is was fitted to a 2005 boat and never used.

I suspect it can be fixed but I do not know how to cure it.

Is the flame failure 'pin' too close to the burner? Sometimes they get knocked and consequently sit in the cool part of the flame.

Hehe, yes could be handy, I dread to imagine a passage without copious amounts of tea on hand, although I rather like the idea of making a flask of boiling water up before setting off, save boiling water hanging round on the move...but i digress. Could be that the sensor has moved out of the flame, take the burner apart and compare its position to the working ring.

Does sound like the Flame failure cut-out (thermocouple), probably worth talking to Smev and getting a replacement....not normally a lot of pennies...and relatively easiy ro change..HTH

[/ QUOTE ] Not too sure if it is the same distance as the other. The problem is when I let the control spring back up slowly. The flame just goes out. Very rarely though it will stay on. Would the pin distance cause this? I will check tomorrow when I visit the boat.

Ty undoing the cross-head screw at the centre of the burner and rotating the assemply so that you get a good flame hitting the flame failure capsule.
If that fails it looks like your capsule is dead!!

The key point is to check that the thermocouple has a good flame playing on it. Sometimes a bit of sh+t blocks the vent next to the little pin and one gets the problem. Common on domestic ovens. Also SWMBO sometimes doesn't press hard enough (arthritus) and the electro-magnet doesn't hold. If it holds sometimes, but not others, I doubt a failure. Usually all or nothing. Anyway, bits are standard and cheap at gas suppliers.

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks for the help! I assume the thermocouple is the small pin beside the burner that has a flame through it when working. I started it this morning having run my finger around the pin and it worked first time. Strange! The flame when it doesn't hold goes out just at the very end as the control springs back to rest in its normal position.

It turned out as advised that a good clean around the pin and shake by the side of the burner did the job.

Stays on every time now.

I've also got a Smev burner/sink combo with one burner producing a very low flame. I want to take the burner cover off to clean the jets. Can anyone tell me what size the Torx screws are please?

One thing I've found is that whilst the button is held in and you're doing you count to ten, have the knob set for a low flame rather than a high flame. Sounds back to front but with the gas set to high, the flame can spread out too far and miss heating up the flame fail device. Try knob low and the flame stays closer to it.

Thanks Martin. I tried that a couple of times but it made no difference. (I've tried 2 different gas bottles too) I think I do need to get that burner cover off!
