My SH 1500 base set has suddenly 'lost' a part of one channel, I.e. I can only hear one side of the conversation on channel 68. As a control test, running a handheld on the same channel I can hear both sides of the conversation so I dont think its a duplex issue. Other channels seem OK; monitoring channel 71 in Harwich Harbour I can hear both sides talking as normal.

I tried a brief check call with the port authority on channel 68 and they could hear me without problem. However, I could only hear their acknowledgement on the hand held, not through the main transmitting unit.

The radio is only about 4 years old and has been absolutely fine until this point.

Any thoughts anyone?

Any chance you have accidentally switched to US instead of Int setting?

Some channels are duplex in US that are simplex here and vice versa. I don't know about 68 but it is certainly true for 80, which is duplex here and simplex in US.

Thanks for that idea; I'll check next time I'm down

It may be a red herring, I have dug out my VHF Radiotelephony for Yachtsmen booklet (Admittedly quite an old version), it lists all the channels and their frequencies, and it seems that 68 is Simplex here and in the US, so your problem may lie elsewhere.

Sounds like corruption of the channel file. Check if when switched to USA channel 68 does work normally to confirm this..

If you had the software and wire you could fix yourself. Maybe your dealer does. Just a tick in a box on a programming chart.
Unfortunately it will probably need to go back to Standard Vertex/Yaesu for re programming.

Thanks for the responses. Sadly it wasn't as simple as changing back to international settings and today it seems to have got worse so that nothing comes through on any channels unless the transmitting source was right alongside. Aerial problems, I thought, but connecting it to an alternative aerial didn't seem to produce any change. I'll get the set tested by a dealer and work from there.
