I had a new SS put on last winter - the previous one had been glued on and wouldn't come off so the new one has gone over the top. This weekend the sail got a severe test returning from Ostend. When the wind is on the non-SS side (i.e the SS is on the outside) the SS fills with air - a blooming great sausage down the leech and at the foot. This not only looks stupid but wrecks the airflow and the sail won't roll away properly.

So today I took it off and went to the sailmakers with it. It appears that the sail has had two SSs before the glued one and there are stitch holes straight and diagonal all over the place, through which, presumably, the wind blows. Apparently some sailmakers won't do more than two SSs and glued ones invariably lead to problems. Anyway he is going to sew over the diagonal stitching in the hope this solves the problem. Otherwise it's a new jib /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

And it was all going so well.......

Anybody care to offer hope, solution, money.

I had the same problem with a brand new forsail and was told that within time (quickly) the SS would become porous enough to allow the trapped air to dissapate. If it didn't the suggestion was to perforate the SS to allow the trapped air out. In the event it did become porous and is now no problem.

Things you never hear in a sailmakers:

No.43.

'Absolutely no problem, sir, it is an easy job and won't cost much.'

No. 44

'It will be ready for you first thing in the morning.'

On my new genoa I opted to do away with the ss for better airflow and now use a sock to keep the sail cleaner and totally foil uv degradation. So now I get to worry about the expensive sock degrading in the sunlight...you can not win

How often do you sail? I used to have an r/r genny with no s/s. I simply removed the sail when I left the boat. As I sailled for a couple of long weekends plus a couple of 1or 2 week holidays a year it was relatively little hassle to put the sail on & off the foil at the start & end of each period aboard.
