Asking for a friend who owns a Centaur with a Volvo Penta MD2 engine.

All is well when the boat is in forward gear but, after passing the lever through neutral, the lever is stiff when pushing into reverse. The lever doesn’t push far and the prop does go into reverse but when his hand is taken of the lever it slips into neutral.

The lever itself looks ok and the cables to the gearbox run smoothly and are clearly exerting pressure on the end of the gearbox

Can anyone advise please?

The first thing to do is to disconnect the cables from the gearbox and try to operate it by hand to determine for sure if the gearbox or the selector is at fault

Change the gear oil too. Cheap and easy first step, and often solves these types of problems.

Both the engine and gearbox oil should be a straight mineral oil and not a multi grade or other types .

Check that the lever on the gearbixis moving it's ful travel and if not make the necessarycedjustments on th control system to increase the travel,
