We have a new 2012 Mercury 225 OptiMaxx that was just returned from having new pistons put on it because the old Pistons had a hole. It was just returned to us six months ago, we took it out once after we received it where the engine notified us that there was water in the gas, we turned it off and it hasn’t been started for three months while we are getting a new Gas Tank built for it. We recently took it into the mechanic to have the issue of water in the gas tank fixed and now they are telling us that the Pistons are rusted and we need new pistons again mind you six months ago we paid $4000 to get these pistons. Now this mechanic wants $5000 cause he says we need new pistons again. is this even possible? That a boat that had just been out once could need new pistons again just for sitting for 3 months? Could someone please help us this is our first boat ever, we are in over 17k in this boat and we have just been able to take it out 4 times total from the time we purchased it.

I would first wonder why a piston had a hole in it, that would indicate an injector problem and the cylinder running so weak that it burnt a hole, so I hope that problem has been addressed. I wouldn’t have thought there could be so much water in the engine as the water in fuel alarm is designed to work early rather than too late. Take off the fuel filter and empty it into a container to see how much water there actually is, its more likely to damage the injectors if it has stood 3 mths with water in the system. If there was enough in the cylinders to rust the piston rings I would have expected the engine to run roughly or stop on its last trip. Also I would look at the plugs for any signs of rust and do a compression check.
