I have been tweaking the pro-forma I use for sight reduction. It works well for me, except for the ugly fiddling to modify the DR longitude to a value which gives an LHA of whole degrees?

My form kind of ignores that and I scribble in the margin. Has anyone got a form that 'sytematises' the process so I am less likely to make a stupid mistake?

thanks

I have a series on my website www.cockpitcards.co.uk , each pro-forma has a blank form one side and a completed form with instructions on the other. The instructions are memory joggers for where you need to look to extract the relevant information. Unless you are working sights on a regular basis everyone needs reminding!
The forms assume the user is using the Nautical Almanac & Rapid Sight Reduction Tables (was called AP3270).
Forms available for Sun, Sun Mer Pass, Polaris, Star, Selected Stars, Planets, Moon, Compass Check. They are encapsulated with a Matt laminate so can be written on with soft pencil if needed.

Thanks both. PHB, I like to be walked through the process more step-by-step than yours, but it does have the merit of being clean and simple. Mine has boxes and arrows all over it!

chart5011. Interesting. I don't like the idea of an encapsulated sheet - I like to keep the previous days set to glance at for a sanity check at various stages, and my writing is already barely legible. But they look to be well laid-out. I may spring for a set and photocopy them! If only someone sold them as blocks of pre-printed tear-off pages.

Did my RYA Astro evening classes a good few years ago and ended up with 10, yes ten, proformas……All gratefully received from the (very good) instructor, however….

Over the years I have reduced these to one A4 form.

It does : sun, stars, planets, moon, Polaris and meridian sights, using either AP 3270 or NP 401.

PM me with your email if you would like a copy, I do not have the skills to upload it.

I do exactly as you say using the encapsulated sheets as dividers in a file with photocopied blank forms, that way you can refer to the instruction sheet as you work.
We did publish them as pads with the top sheet the instruction sheet but they were too expensive to produce with the very small demand for this kind of niche product.

I've used - and looked at - dozens of proformae over the years. The Encapsulated Cards are as good as they get and, with some sheets photocopied and retained in a binder, meet all the needs.

A recommendation....

:)

And another one! Mine arrived today and they are first class. Came nicely wrapped in an old Admiralty chart of Gibraltar as well!
