PRM gearbox nut removal

At last its out.For those interested I tried running the engine in gear for half an hour first. Before trying force I tried the 18mm impact socket with a normal ratchet and it came out without any fuss!

Anyway suppose I should drain it and refill.I can just feel the drain plug I think but any idea what size? and its not where the picture shows it. OR can I use the syphon pump?

I always syphoned the oil out on my last boat, in which the (PRM80) drain plug was a sod to reach. Gearbox oil gets a fairly easy time if changed as recommended, so leaving a few cc of the old stuff in won't harm.
Your oil volume is probably different from mine, but mine took 600cc, which was handy as Fairy liquid sometimes comes in bottles of precisely that size: squeezy bottle makes filling easy and mess-free, especially if you warm the new oil beforehand.

Hope not to hear from you again next time the box is due an oil change ;)

P.S. A thought: during the time I had my PRM80, PRM changed the recommended oil spec from engine oil to ATF (after some cone clutch failures, I think). You might want to check whether this also applies to your 120.

Funny you should say that.I wondered why I had bought a bottle of ATM last year. I must have read it somewhere when I was going to change it. And yes the manual says SAE30 eng. oil. I'll check, thanks.

By the way what prompted all this gearbox check was a local boat recently had gearbox failure with a very sad outcome!

Really glad with your success removing the plug. As 'macd' says, its easy enough to suck the old oil out. I use one of those little brass pumps often fitted to yacht engines for removing engine oil with a thin hard plastic tube. I wouldn't even attempt to get at my drain plug, there'd be more blue language than progress. Those photo's are pretty damn harrowing, makes me shudder when I see things like that...
