My PRM 80 has difficulty engaging forward when cold. This was happening years ago and I changed the oil to ATF which cured the problem. After stripping it the only thing I can find wrong is the selector shimming, which was 0.8mm too loose. I've attached a picture of the cone which appears ok but I don't really know how to check it. Anyone else had the problem?

Yes, got the manual ok thanks, but nothing in it about the cone wear. The new cones are not interchangable so the mating gears have to be replaced as well at over £400, The new ones have no grooves, these are now machined into the inside face of the gear.
