So finally managed to get dipstick free and check it - box has sat under the cockpit for nigh on 30yrs - with little care. The studs, bolts, dipstick etc. all well seized in place. Box works lovely, but it always niggles that no maintenance made on it.

So today - taking the risk - I managed to get the dipstick free and see that "oil" ...

More like yoghurt !!

So look in book ... Rotella 20 ... or 30 ..... plus other lesser known specs ! Well that's then - even a straight 30 grade is no longer sold over here ... everyones gone 5-40, 10-40 or 15-40.

So question - others with a PRM 140 box ... what oil do you put in yours ?

(My thoughts are to go with same oil that goes in my engine - 15-40 .... therefore simplifying the process !)

I have the manuals and drawings, lub charts etc. It's just they all quote Rotella and other specialised lub-oils ... which are not generally available over here. And that's with me in the oil trade !
I was interested what others put in as I know even in UK some of the oils named would be not so easy to source for man in street.

15-40 is on it's way ... so that's sorted !

Cheers

ASAP Supplies have a recommendation for this. Can't remember what it is, but worth asking them and from memory it was not the 15-40. They are very helpful and seem to know their stuff

From the PRM manual downloaded just now
Below Zero
0°C to 30°C
Above 30°C 10W30 or 40W. Engine Oil.
10W30 or 15W40. Engine Oil.
10W30 or 20W. Engine Oil.

Why is it some dont belive what has been posted /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

This is the same info I got directly from PRM Newage myself.

Some of the earlier owners handbooks quote a much heavier oil but this has now been succeeded by the table you quoted as above.

I put Castrol GTX in mine.

As I posted earlier ... the problem for me is that the oils quoted are not available out here, unless I approach specialist and then I won't pay their price !!
Like many manuals they have tables based on UK -Europe / USA brands and as soon as you are in a different arena - table is only good for the SAE rating.

I can get 5-40, 10-40, 15-40 everywhere here so no problem.

I reckon anything will be better than the grey yoghurt in it at the mo!!

Badgers referring to the photo I posted on another site of the dipstick ....

The box has languished under the cockpit sole for 35 yrs ... last 10 in my care. Every so often I lift sole and have a go at the box - but even when I bought the boat - dipstick, drain, various were seized and I was very worried that trying to get them out - would break them off - and I'd be then in deep do-do's ... Few days ago - I decided To hell with it .... Finally after much grunting, swearing, bashed knuckles etc. - I got the required out ... and that was the "yoghurt" found ....
