Hi, I own a Princess V39, 2014 model.
I am encountering a problem with my Volvo Drives.
Both drives are fully done at -6.
Port drive shows an alarm and Trim monitor displays wrongly that Port drive is in breach position and monitor shows a reading 56 whilst the drive is down.
Port Drive does not lift or lower from the helm. Only STB drive moves.
Tried replacing trim sensor but problem persists.
Tried trim calibration reset but problem persists.
Tried switching PCU and EVC module but problem persists.
Anybody encountering this problem ?

One of my legs forgot its trim duty back in the Winter ... turned out to be a hydraulic pipe that had got pinched when they put the leg back after a service. It had a slight fluid leak thus rendering the trim useless ... that's what they told me anyway! Luckily it was guaranteed!

Did you follow the correct installation procedure when replacing the trim sender, it has to be wound fully in one direction first or it will run out of travel breaking it in the process. Sounds as if its installed in the wrong position. Have you tried rotating the rubber spigot on the sensor with it out, to see if the trim gauge responds.
If its showing Beach position it will lock out any further trim up action.
Check if it works when removed from the shield, if not then the problem is with the cabling I suspect, there is a connector if I recall behind the engine between the sender and PCU and I have had one once with a pin pushed back so it didn't make contact.

Hi Guys,

Just following up to see what the issue was here in the end? I think my issue may be in some way similar so keen to hear what you did/found.

I have a D4-260 with DPH Drive that has the EVC display (under tacho) showing 156deg, and the engine wont start thinking the leg is too high when it is not. When I activate the trim up or down, the gauge works fine, with both the trim gauge and the EVC panel showing the same value as it moves up or down. When the engine is running the trim gauge displays accurately, and the EVC display remains at 156deg - but still allows me to rev and operate the boat normally. There were no changes, it all worked fine on Tuesday, then Wednesday morning the fault appeared..

Any pearls of wisdom would be really appreciated.

thanks

Place the system into calibration mode the first adjustment will be trim calibration , if it won’t calibrate it could be the trim sender or the bolt that holds the pin has come loose.

If the pin won’t rotate the sender won’t turn to give a reading .

Thanks for the reply.

I have done and auto cal on the system - but have not done a full trim cal - which I will try tonight to see what happens. I have pulled all the connectors I can reach apart and cleaned them but made no difference. The Trim Sender is very hard to get to - I will have to remove the engine to do this so am hoping its not the issue...

The EVC Display shows 156deg, sometimes flickering between 156 and 160 when it is static. However when I move the trim up and down the gauge appears to read and move correctly (and the trim gauge and EVC display the same number) which makes me think the sender is sending some signal/information - unless there is a secondary feed? When trim is not being activated either up or down the small standalone trim gauge sometimes does not have a reading, and the orange LED is illuminated (upper limit).

I'm not much of a technician but it seems like there is a high resistance joint in there somewhere that is causing the issue - I just dont know where to look for it.. :)

Thanks again for the reply - I'll update with what I find and if you have any other advice I am all ears.

Hi Guys,

Just to close this one out. My issue was the trim sender in the end. The shaft had all but seized, the auto cal and full cal did not resolve it, when we pulled it out the unit showed signs of corrosion etc. It is being replaced as we speak - thanks for the PM's and advice.

Cheers

Not that I could find online or when I asked around - I believe it is a Bosch unit but I did not have a stockist or the details of the actual sensor to chase it up - the boat is with the mechanic and they are 1300km away from me. There are two types of sensor used for the DPH drive - one is around $900, one is around $300 (AUD) - thankfully I had the cheaper model installed on my unit - first bit of luck I've had!
