Won't the taxman get a share of your boat too when you shuffle off?;)
Yup -- so that value needs to low --- in the general scheeme of thing - so my wife who,s ex HMRc accountant tells me.

Btw - not interrested in bags of " - cream cakes " etc - how ever - there is a opposing dynamic - its this the "mental barrier "
I ,d or we ( wife ) would rarther take out our Bentley and park in Liddle ( when in UK ) and pay 79p for a triple pack of peppers than go Morrisons 89 p or Waitrose 99 p .

So what I,a. Saying here There is more to to the "cream cakes " argument I would like to add " mental barrier " into the whole boat @ £ 1-5?m or what ever equation -- you have to want one - simples - jüst -go got it !

Simply writing it off as a " gov will get it anyhown" ---- is not true !

It may be some on here are not domiciled in the Uk for tax purposes and they have means of avoiding UK IHT, my point was that for me living life to full and enjoying my boating, is preferable to simply amassing more wealth, which may or may not be swallowed by the taxman. Yes my boat will be part of my assets on death, but at least the taxman is also paying a large part of the depreciation!

Personally I would prefer my offspring to strive and build their own wealth, and be a better for it, rather than simply inherit some massive property portfolio... of course all imho! But each to their own, others may have their own opinion and I would not argue....

Yep, my wife and I intend to enjoy our remaining days, hopefully many more of them (note, very best wishes to Wavey and his wife!). So boating is very high on our list of stuff to spend our available cash on. Nowhere near buying a new Princess, but the intention is the same.

1.2 1.5 mil didnt know we had so many mugs with that amount of dosh to splash, ive ben boating for twenty odd years i stuck 100 grand in the pot and thats it that has kept me in boats for years trading up or down motorboat or yacht what ever i fancy changing to at the time, when the pot is empty thats it for me. 1.5 ml i want bricks and a roof for that.
oh well its a very merry xmas for the Princess dealer ho ho ho

I couldn't afford to 'stick £100,000 in the pot' for a boat and would likely invest it in property if that amount came my way.

By your own logic, that presumably makes you a mug then? :)

The point i was making at that time i had 100k to invest for my boating end of. when it runs out trading up or down so be it . I cuurently have a boat worth approx 50k. my 36 ft is quit below average when i see what gets spent in some of these marinas so when i jack it all in , lets say 4-5 yrs i will probably end up with 25k so i have lost 75k in 25 yrs of boating not a bad loss. all my money has gone into property investment for rental so the long shot is i dont have to work so am no mug thank you.
You spend 1.5ml on a boat and that will lose at least 200k in about 5 yrs if not more, couple of guys i met had about 500grand left through parants poping their clogs not sure on the exact amount, they blew the lot on boats
one guy had to get out after a couple of years for what ever reason and he lost about 250 grand virtualy had to give it away, my point is you can only sell the family jewels once, yeah i know long time dead, cant put a price on leasure cant take it with you etc. i new one guy in mercury who lost his house over a bloody boat.
i know who the mugs are

And the point I'm making is that you're judging everybody as though they're at your financial level.

There are many, no doubt much poorer than you, who would absolutely consider you a mug for blowing £75K on boating. They'll have a canoe and tell you that their 25 years only cost £750.

There are many, no doubt far wealthier than you, who will spend £1.5M on a boat without it remotely impacting on 'the family jewels', others who will spend double that just paying the running costs on a superyacht in 12 months without the slightest effect on their financial well being.

To judge anyone a 'mug' for how they choose to spend their money, or assume the only way anyone could possibly afford a six or seven figure boat is by inheriting, and then wasting that inheritance is, well, odd.

+1

With no children to worry about, and with wife's/crew's full support, my view is if you have got the cash and can afford it to blow it on something that gives you life enhancing experiences then WTF... just do it... after all its only money and so spend it and live life to the full while you can!
