Princess 54 New Cockpit Covers

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to get new cockpit covers made for my Princess 54. I currently have white PVC covers (made by Flexicovers) which, whilst need replacing anyway thanks to a small tear, are quite unwieldy when it comes to rolling them up and securing them and also - critically - go green in the winter. So the plan is to get Flexicovers to make new ones in Sunbrella fabric (which I think will roll up easier and be less bulky) and in navy blue which - as well as matching the boat aesthetic - I'm thinking will hide the inevitable green winter growth (until I clean them).

Does this sound right to the committee?
 
I think you have been misinformed.
Flexicovers do supply covers for Princess but I think you will find that your covers were made by Lang and Potter based in Plymouth.
In fact, Lang and Potter even have workshops inside the Newport Street factory.
I know that Lang and Potter will supply the covers using the white PVC or the conventional Sunbrella materials.
If you contact Lang and Potter, they should have all the templates etc
Neither Lang and Potter nor Flexicovers will be cheap though and they will need fitting carefully after you receive them.

The first time that we replaced the covers for our P67, we used Lang and Potter.
Since then, I have bought my own Sailrite sewing machine and made my own.
I have also tracked down the manufacturer of the white PVC and I can buy the material myself significantly cheaper.
So much so that I can make my own cockpit covers for about £100.
I know that the Sunbrella fabric is the more traditional fabric to use but I really like working with the PVC material.
All covers shrink over time but I think that the PVC isn't as bad.

Last October, I fitted my most recent set of home made cockpit covers.
Here are some photos after I fitted them.

Making them myself also allows me to make them the way I want.
For example, the Lang and Potter design uses Velcro flaps that can be a bit annoying when they are new.
My most recent design uses a more standard zipping method.

If you need more information on how to make them, just ask.
And remember, it doesn't stop at cockpit covers, when you can make covers cheaply, all the other ones can be made as well.
See in the first photo, I have also made a cover for the tender - using the same PVC fabric.
Likewise, flybridge cushion covers.

Note that the PVC material is available in other colours - White, Blue and Grey.
IMO, the Blue colour isn't very good but I like the Grey that I used on the flybridge covers above.

That is seriously impressive! Alas my sewing skills won't stretch to this, so shop-bought it is :)

the covers you have were made by flexicover as i know the boat and we had a set made by them as well at the same time but we have just had a new cover made by jb covers in hamble it took awhile but they have improved the appearance as we have had white and blue but now have the new colour of princess grey/brown

Ahh - dear old Jim.
He does make good covers.
