Anyone know the owners of this boat? I'm about to buy the same tender as them, and can't decide whether to put an Evinrude ETEC 30 or 40 on the back. I'm interested to hear how they have got on with the 30, especially if they've tried pulling ringos and/or adult water-skiers.

There's an interesting You Tube vid where an Etec 30 pulls a 16' boat with four adults up onto the plane easily, whereas on the same boat with the same adults a Yamaha 40 struggles to the point that they have to move their weight forward. This makes me think the 30 may be OK, and it's 25 kgs lighter than a 40, but it's a bit too late to find out that it's not torquey enough once I get the boat.

A buddy of mina has a Zodiac Rib with a Mariner 30 and it struggles towing a large ringo with a few kids or adults on ski's.

Thanks rlw and zippy, your posts explain my dilemma well. I have a 30 hp Honda at the moment, and it doesn't have enough grunt even on a lighter, flatter hulled tender, but then it's a carburetted four-stroke which generally seem a bit sluggish. I was originally thinking of speccing a 40 Yamaha on the new tender because they are quite light for the hp rating, but then I saw a video where the Etec 30 outperforms the Yam 40 in getting a heavy boat on the plane, which seems quite analogous to pulling big ringos or adult water skiers, as the problem is always getting them up onto the plane. The video is made by an Evinrude dealer though, so maybe the Yam is over-propped.

Relevant bit is from 1:57: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZvIw83uZgY

I'm now wondering whether to get the Etec 40 which would definitely do the job, but it's a lot of weight on the back of the tender. Suzuki 4 stroke also looks good as it has much bigger displacement than the Yam, but it's as heavy as the ETEC.

Hi Nick
We have the yam 40 on our zodiac 340 tender have to say a little disappointed re performance once on the plane goes like stink just added the clip on wings hopping that will get it out of the hole faster, could be the weight distribution as with both of us sat at the back + engine better when swmbo sits in the middle it's better ,not saying she,s fat :)

Yep, that Yam 40 seems to lack torque at lower RPM

Yup, all the Yams do, or perhaps all 4-strokes do. I had the Yam 40 (the new/current curvy hood design, with efi) and while it was a nice engine it lacked low down torque. My current Yam 70 is the same. I'm perfectly happy with it but if buying again I might get the Etec 60 rather than the Yam 70.

Occasionally I've though of buying etec 60 and trying it instead of the yam 70, then selling whichever one I like less.

I've decided to go for a 40hp, either Suzuki or Evinrude, on the basis that the Yamaha lacks torque, the Merc is too heavy, there's no Tohatsu dealer in Cote d'Azur, and I don't like the Honda dealer I've been using in Antibes (they insist on a visit to assess an issue, then a formal quote, then payment of 50% up front, then they'll finally send someone to fix it!!)

The Suzuki has a displacement of 941cc (the Yam has only 747cc) and as the old saying goes, there's no replacement for displacement. Etec is in between, but despite this and the 2 stroke advantage has no weight saving over the Suzuki. In the Youtube vid above the Suzuki holds its own against the Etec, so I think either will be fine.

I'm hoping to get in by the weekend after next as I have a lads weekend, and the old tender has disappointingly fallen to pieces after eight years, despite supposedly being a quality Zodiac hypalon RIB.

Not sure if I've done the right thing, but the Suzuki 50 hp is the same weight as the 40 and was only £200 more, so I've ordered a 3.4m RIB with a 50 hp outboard. It should be fast enough!

Yup, etec 60 is same weight as 40. anyway, yours will go like stink. Time to post tcm pictures again (2.2m rib)
