Hello. My brother is thinking to change his princess engines.

His thoughts are these:

1). Single engine
2). 20-30 miles speed. (20-26 knots)
3). Outboard engine
4). Diesel

Any thoughts/ proposals ?

Thank you.

I don't think you will find an outboard diesel, particularly one with the power to get the speeds you mention.

Why go outboard? The boat was built with inboard engines, and even a large outboard petrol will need to be 250 hp+ to get the speeds you talk here, which will the4n make the boat very thirsty.

I'm not sure you could even mount an outboard on the P32 without considerable modifications.

Best just to replace like for like, or better 2 smallish (150+ hp) diesels.

He was thinking for an outboard, with a drive shaft. What can i say ? I told him to put a couple of volvo tamd-31 (130 PS) to be sure, but he answered that he wanted a single engine.

What is your opinion ?

Thank you

What is currently in the boat? 1 or 2 engines? I think most of these were supplied with 2 Volvo petrol engines. To change from 2 to 1 engines or vice versa means considerable modification of the transom to plug the gaping holes.

I'm not sure what you mean about the drive shaft. All outboards have these, but I just struggle to think that an outboard would work on the P32.

@ Rafiki : Currently it has 2 nissan motors. The ones supplied from manufacturer....
I know it has a lot of work for the modification, he doesn't leave the boat all day !!!
He told me that he wants a single engine with an axle.... I don't know more... Sorry....

@PCUK : Thank you for the proposal !!!

A single engine with an axle?? what to convert one engine to run two shafts - different! As has been said, why not just replace with a pair of diesel engines. That was how the boat was designed and cut and should keep the hull balanced and provide the type of speed wanted.

I was out last year with a friend - his P32 was fitted with two VP75 diesels and was struggling to get 6/7knots. We went from Neyland to Bristol - 4hops via Sandersfoot/Swansea/Penarth/Kavannaughs Quay(sic) and took 400litres of juice - for what it's worth.

For any sensible help we need way way more info.

Where is the boat going to be used, are you in UK ?

Inland water ways or estuary and perhaps bit of close in coastal stuff. ?

What is wrong with the Nissan engines ? these probably replaced the original Volvo petrol or diesels.
IMHO opinion there is no way way of earth you should be overpowering that hull with monster engines,it was designed to handle safely a couple of hundred HP max.

I think he means the original Volvo AQD40's 106hp which were Nissan based blocks and are notorius for cooling problems, best avoided if possible.

However agree with trying to fix originals, re-enginening never makes any financial sense at all, if the originals are knacked and beyond repair the only sensable option is a pair diesels around 130-150hp, Fords from the likes of Lancing Marine maybe a good option as they do adapters to fit the existing legs.

Outboards, axles? conversion to single engine? maybe but why?, it will become one of the those unfinished projects on Ebay that is worthless.

I think a pair of Peugeot 2L 140hp HDi engines would be a good set up, I doubt it would get the speed he wants but they could be fitted without too much work.

I'd go for a Cummins 6BTA M2. A brilliant bullet-proof engine giving 300hp at 2800rpm.

Mmmm.....Back in the dark ages old man Springfield at his yard in Maidenhead had mould fror the Senior 32 hull. We put put in a single Perkins T6.354 on a V box into 32 hull and it worked a treat. Cummins 330B is similar sized envelope to Perkins however a far nicer wigit, stuff ZF IRM220V on the back, no, front, ditch all nasty outdrive stuff and it would work, I know from experience, trim would be perfect.

Why would anybody ditch his Chrylsler/Nissan SD33's easy cos the Chrysler Marine hang on bits will have suffered the effects of marine aging and replacements are difficult/impossible to obtain.

However is old vessel worth spending 25/30K on.......I doubt it.

I don't know why.... As I wrote above, I proposed him, after a quick search, to replace them with a couple of TAMD-31 engines. But he is very stubborn.

Thank you Oldgit.

I have seen this page already, such as a pdf file with the engine proposals for princess 32.

Let me give you the info you want. We live in Greece and the boat will be used in Aegean and Ionian sea.
The engines were destroyed by some good guys....

Really ?? Oh, thank you. I'll let him know...

As i already wrote Chris, i told him that 2 engines is better.

The conversion is something it came out of his head, and he is stuck with it !!

Thank you.

If he hears that he won't get that speed, he will be very mad..... I am not telling him that... :D

Thank you.

Some update.

I sent an e-mail to lancing maarine and Mike answered this

Code:
If you are on sterndrives, you MUST use two, or you will not be able
to get the required amount of power down into the water, so two
engines around 130HP/3800RPM would need to be added to your existing
sterndrives.

If you are shaft drive, I would have thought it would be a lot of
hassle for no good reason to convert to single shaft.
