Primus Stoves

Re: Deoderising Paraffin with White Spirit

The Pardey's mentioned it in one of their books. Depends on the quality of paraffin you use I'd say. Cristal clear lamp oil is as odourless as it gets but if you use cheaper yellowish stuff, yes that can be a bit smelly. I gave it a try and added some isopropanol alcohol. It did take most of the smell away. Probably due to the hotter flame.

If you don't lke the idea of LPG on board, why not try a spirit stove - rather than a primus. Low cost and effective, also light weight. Runs on clear meths. OF

Well to be honest there is a aesthetic aspect too and all the meths stoves are as ugly as sin. Roach was never fitted with a primus even though there is a space for one in the plans. She had, instead, one of the first gas stoves. This is a real beauty, cream enamelled and with bakelite knobs. The trouble is that it weighs a ton, has no flame failure device, and is not gimballed (leaving me with many coffee spills this season). This is the reason I think that maybe a single primus would suit me. It would suit my type of sailing and free up the gas locker into a cool box as well as being in keeping with the yacht.

I have an old enamelled Taylors 2 burner job on Emily. Wife picked it up for a fiver at a furniture auction. Don't think anyone else knew what it was, let alone the value.
I wouldn't be without it.
And it doesn't take up much room even though Em is only 22'3".
The so called oven eventually got the chop as it really didn't heat up anything at all. So I cut the height down a bit.

I sometimes run it on white spirit when parafin isn't available, and it works fine, and does burn cleaner.

As to lighting it's easy.
Use a plastic syringe for the meths, the sort you can get at farm shops or from a vet.
Then it's easy to squirt it straight into the bowl, and a long 'cooks match' light is.
Or, as someone said, use one of those gas hob lighter thingys.

Yes and I go along with the upsidedown flowerpot too.
Brilliant.

One of the factors in the decision to purchase Border maid was her Taylors 029 stove in excellent condition. I think they are wonderful things but yes the deckhead above does get a bit discoloured.

Having to repaint the deckhead can be a bit of a chore, but I intend at some point to put a thin sheet of copper as a heat shield over the stove. This will act as a fire safety measure in the event I try and open the valves before the burner has heated up, and keep it looking neat.

If fact I'd remove any vinyl headlining over a kerosene stove just in case of a flare up.

Taylors Stoves

<<This will act as a fire safety measure in the event I try and open the valves before the burner has heated up,>>

I find you don't need to open the valves to have this problem. If you're not extremely careful on my Taylors 28 a little bit of paraffin will have wept into the meths cups. You put a bit of meths in, light it and voila, big smokey luminous flame. The cure by the way is to a) check carefully and b) if it does have a bit of paraffin on the fibreglass wick in the cup, wipe the cup out and burn off the paraffin on the wick (or whatever thatfluffy fibreglass stuff is called) in a pot placed outside. And the way to ensure the valves don't leak is to depressurise them - switch off the fuel at the tank or open the pump valve.

Anyone come across an electric fuel valve which would work for the fuel tank on the Taylors?

Re: Taylors Stoves

Sadly no, but not too downhearted as it would have meant getting rid of my flip down counter.

What I really want, and what will fit like a glove is an Ideal K from Taylors. Atleas with that I can cook the pasta and the sauce at the same time, or the bacon and the coffee...

Re: Taylors Stoves

Thanks for investigating, but now I have downloaded all the dimensions from the Taylors web site the Ideal K, is rather Ideal for me. The grill version is just slightly too big to swing in a seaway.

Re: Taylors Stoves

It's not very good for toast. It keeps bacon warm while the eggs fry. I find you can make toast by just bunging the bread on the hotplate, like an AGA.
