I have an old Primus stove which I want to refurbish and replace the gas
on my boat( Evening at the anchorage with snoring primus etc.).The pressure valve in the pump seems to be faulty as
kerosene leaks back into the pump cylinder nearly causing a conflagration.
Is this valve likely to be corroded.I know there is a special key
to remove it which I have not got.I also need a source of prickers!!
Any experts out there on these stoves willing to give advice.
Thanks in advance.

Have tried places like <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.fieldandtrek.com/ft1/>Field and Trek</A>?

Are you suicidal?

Warming up a primus with meths and the tricky lighting proceedure on pumping up the kerosene and the potential for pressure leaks of kerosene in the midst of flames all add up to a lot of fire risk for a little romance.

The best place for an old primus is in an old shed and not on a moored boat that you cannot safely and immediately get out of.

Well thats my opinion anyway

Forgot to mention, once you have the pump valve out check to see if it is just gummed up with old fuel. That is the usual problem with most of the old stoves, take the stove apart and wash out the old tank as well as the rest of the parts. I made a wrench out of steel tube that I had filed a notch in the end. Don't forget to soak the leather cup with light oil.
I also replaced gas with an old primus, if you want practical you would not have a sailboat.
What are the stats on your Mirror Offshore? That is one I have not heard of on this far side of the big pond. I do not recall seeing one when I was over there, Wicklow area.

The Mirror Offshore is a nineteen foot motorsailer designed by the great dutch
designer Van Der Stadt and built in England in the seventies. A search in Google will get a pic as there are a few for sale in the English brokerages.

I suppose it is a fire risk but opening the pressure valve quickly dampens down
any situation and the stove is I think preferable to an unvented gas camping cooker.

I will try fabricating the key from pipe.
thans again for all the help.

Hi
There is another way to get at that valve and that is to unsolder the complete
pump from the tank. The valve is a springloaded cup with a cork washer seating against the inner end of the pump. The spring may have lost tension or got stuck.
You might like to consider the Optimus 2 burner stove with the separate tank, this looks like a conventional 2 burner gas stove, does not need meths to preheat and is entirley self contained. Quite expensive but there are some around secondhand
, I have had great service from mine and eliminated gas from the boat

If you look in the "For Sale" message board, Iain Simpson has a primus stove that he is trying to get rid of......
