Hull was epoxy primed earlier this year (Hempadour) and Cruiser Uno over - before putting on another coat of Uno, there are some small patches where surveyor has scraped away a/f and couple of larger areas where back to bare gelcoat on rudder (don't know why). OK just to use Primocon on these or should I put gelshield or similar on the bare patch?

Errrrr

I was always told you should not put a two pack onto a one pack (it can react), But can put a one pack onto a two pack.

To be safe I would stick a couple of coats of primocon on then 2 x antifoul ontop.

I'm only a beginner at this so take anyone else's thoughts over mine but I encountered a similar problem recently. After research here was my conclusion:

yes. epoxy on the bare patch. Of course you're not supposed to put gelshield on top of antifoul so there you have a problem with "patch coating" your area: even after you've taken to it with a bit of wet n dry to tidy it up and clear the antifoul from what you'll be touching up, the edges won't be perfect. It's impossible to just sand the AF off leaving all the layers of epoxy paint intact along a perfectly straight and tapeable edge. Maybe I was taking things too literally but juggling between the options of having very thin epoxy at the edges or overlapping some antfoul with new epoxy I asked Internaitonal just how bad it would be to overlap micron extra with gelshield. They said try to minimise the overlap, but don't worry about a bit and if it's going to happen restrict yourself to one coat of gelshield a day to minimise problems with the solvents in it working on the layers below. Of course you'll only get one coat of gelshield a day in this weather, and maybe your preferred epoxy is solvent free.

Of course those 750ml cans are expensive and go a long way. Bummer if you're just doing a couple of little patches.

Like I said, trust others with more experience over me here :-)

OK so Hempadour and I think Gelshield are 2 pack so is there a one pack epoxy paint I could put on underneath the Primocon?

Hi Nigel

Yes Gelshield 2 is a 2 pack and I think also Hempadour, however for the the small areas I personally would use 4 coats of Primocon, BUT why not ask the experts at http://www.yachtpaint.com/gbr/diy/contact-us/default.aspx.

Or contact my old mate Richard Jerram, [Richard.Jerram@akzonobel.com] who is Technical Manager for International Paints and very helpfull.

I removed years of old antifoul back to the original gel coat in 2011 and needed advice on the original coatings and what new coatings to apply, he was very helpfull with good sound advice, eight coats later she looked great:D.

thanks for tip - rang International for technical help and advice was to use 4 coats of Interprotect to patch over where original epoxy/newer epoxy primer removed.
