I need to paint an internal door which already has a plastic melamine-type coating. I need to identify a suitable 'primer'.

It has moulded panels, so using a hand-sander would probably prove difficult and ineffective. What could I paint on, before the top coats, that would serve ar primer and undercoat? Thanks.... :)

I think you will find that your favourite DIY shed will have the paint you require.

Maybe called kitchen cupboard paint or something similar. I've seen it in Homebase but not taken that much notice.
I know one of SWMBO friends has used it.

Homebase do a Melamine primer from International
B&Q do a range of one coat melamine paints from Ronseal ... not a big choice of colours though
Wicks do their own brand of primer

We have a product here in Australia called Penotrol. It is made by the Flood company which I think is based in Denmark or somwhere over there.
It is a fantastic product. in your case you just get some on a rag and rub it over the surface of any varnished surface 24 hours before painting on the topcoat paint. No rubbing back the varnish first.
Also if you pour some in your can of oil based topcoat it helps it flow out level giving you a finish which looks like it was put on with a spraygun.
I love the stuff.
