Hi,

I've just varnished my tiller and while the hardware's off it seems a good opportunity to repaint the aluminium extension handle which is flaking badly. Can anyone tell me what is the best primer to use for this as I understand paint has a problem sticking to ally ? Is it enough to rub down the existing paint with wet & dry and then prime or do I need tostrip the entire thing ? (Some of the existing paint seems well adhered).

Thanks,

I would: Acid etch on the bare aluminium, you can get in aerosol can. Feather in the sound paint but check the feathered edge for adhesion. Use 600 or 800 grit wet, For a better finish use a high build primer on top of the acid etch and 800 grit again before a topcoat of your choice.
