Hi,
I need to lift my Sigma 33 (10m) to remove the rudder for bearings inspection / repair. The cost for a lift pressure, wash of the hull ,block off and re-launch is £467.30. Do you know any other places in Solent where I could do the same but for less?

Thanks a lot!
Michal

Don't know but make sure the boat is sitting high enough so that you can drop the rudder otherwise be ready to drop it when it's in the slings.

If you want to know about "other" places it would probably help to know where the quote you have comes from...

It will be cheaper if you can do it in the slings.

You can do it in the floating thingamajob at Cowes (you pay something per half hour). Or Cowes Yacht Haven will lift you for 99 squids; they have a special going. Can you do your bearings in half an hour?

Kingston Marine, up the Medina on the power station site at Cowes had very good mid season charges last year. Its run by the Harbour Authority.

I've done what you are planning to do so think its worth emphasising what others have already said. I suggest you get the yard to drop the rudder out while the boat is in the slings. (You could do it yourself but a Sigma 33 rudder and stock is very heavy so, while the boat is in slings and there's manpower about, get them to do it.) If you wait until its blocked off or in a cradle you will be amazed at how deep a hole you have to dig underneath the rudder to get it out of the hull. And, in my experience, the yard manager doesn't take too kindly to pits being dug in his boat park!

Sorry - the quote is from Gosport Marina

Have you tried Gosport Boatyard next door. Ask them about a bank holiday special if you have the bearing ready to go. Out Friday, back in on the Tuesday sort of thing.

Last time I did try taking the quotes around each of the yards, and the price did drop a bit but a week out was still about £380 with Wicor Marine, so went with GBY as they are next door to us.

Recommend you try Drivers Dry Berthing on the Itchen river at Northam; very reasonable and helpful staff too. They're on the web at MAIL@DRYBERTHING.COM and phone at 02380 233302. Very satisfied customer only. Gill Williams is the director.

I wouldn't rely on Gosport Boatyard ... last year, at the end of February, they promised to take me out 'next Thursday' ... they made an excuse once a fortnight till the middle of May, then, after I'd done the work, they took 3 weeks to put me back in, not the 3 days they'd promised!
