Hello, I know nothing about boats and all that malarkie, but my boyfriend is a very keen sailer, its his birthday soon and I wanted to get him something do do with the boat, or sailing in general. I'm a bit skint so it can't be too expensive but does anyone have any suggestions on anything I could get him? Anything that any of you guys are using and can't live without.

Hope some one can help me out here!! Cheers

Buy him a sailing multi tool, (No, I'm not being funny) "leatherman wave" or "gerber", if he doesn't have one, you'll definitely be in! If he does have one it'll be old and clapped out, so he'll still love you and may even ravish your body, repeatedly!!

But then, what does ..

... when it comes to sailing? Perhaps I_know_nothing could persuade her boyfriend into a more suitable hobby, like building model yachts out of matchsticks.

I_know_nothing, you don't say what persuasion of sailing your boyfriend has: (1) dinghies, (2) sailing yachts, or (3) motorboats. Believe me, it makes a difference.

Sailing gloves (see below) is what my sisters have been trained to give me when they are hard up and desperate for ideas. They're acceptable for either of types (1) and (2), but definitely not (3). Even if he has a pair already, chances are they need replacing as they look like dishwash rags after a couple of uses. Cost about £15 - don't even think about giving him your old leather pair with the finger tips cut off.

How about one of those hats that says 'I'm the captain of this vessel & I have my wife's permission to say so' or something equally daft from [rather expensive] Nauticalia. Alternatively get a T shirt printed with something similar.

Regards

If he is a sailor then I reckon a Wichard Sailing Knife and/or a Blazer Micro Torch and whipping cord would be well received! Ideal for tidying up all the loose ends.

1) A nice knife. Even if he already has one, it will be appreciated.
2) One of those turbo gas cigarette lighters you see in chandlers. I can't think of an earthly use for one for a non-smoker, but they look like a nice toy. I'd like one.
3) Ditto a very small but bright torch. (try camping shops for more reasonable prices)
4) If he's a sailing keelboat type, of the older persuasion, then 5-10 metres of 3/8" galvanised chain. It is irresistable to any man of a certain age.
5) Ditto a brass paraffin anchor lamp from Nauticalia (or similar)
6) A Sou'wester hat. It may indicate to him that you are willing to go out in the sort of weather that he might want to wear it in (SW7+ with rain), so think carefully about this one!
7) A subscription to his favourite Yottie magazine.
8) A bottle of Laphroaig (sorts the men from the boys).
Good luck!

Re: Knives as prezzies ????

Don't you guys know what bad luck it is to give a knife as a present?

Re: Knives as prezzies ????

Yes- supposed to cut the freindship- to get round it, ask for a payment (1p say); no more bad luck. Those turbo lighters are good for sealing rope ends, and look swish. I agree with the knife idea- I would have loved one for Christmas instead of the socks I got from my boyfreind.

Wow thanks everyone for your suggestions. I never thought I'd get so many replies! I think he is going to be a lucky boy!

I love the sailing gloves idea do you know of a reliable website that I could purchase a pair on?

Richard and Tracy
I may have to get a silly captain hat too, I'm sure he will appreciate that!

Andy
Love the flame torches idea, all boys like fire!

Thanks for all your ideas, there all fab, unfortunately he has most of the things on your list, I

don't know what 'A bottle of Laphroaig' is but I'm sure a bottle of dark navy rum wouldn't go a miss! I'm a bit worried about getting him '5-10 metres of 3/8" galvanised chain' as I can see myself sleeping with the fishes with it tied around my legs, so I think I'll give that one a miss. Thanks for all your suggestions though.
