Preveza - Some Local Information Please

I've been trying to call Ionion Marine yesterday and today but getting no answer. The number I'm calling is +30 26820 24305. Would anyone have an alternative number or know what hours the office is open? Thanks.

I think you find there opening times in then winter are around 9.30 to 3.30 and the number you are using is correct +30 26820 24305.
They are normally good at replying to emails too

Don't expect much at weekend .

I think they may still be closed for the Christmas holiday. Aktio are definitely open but I think Ionian and Cleopatra only open next week. Not entirely sure but I think that is why Kevan, the local surveyor, has been fitting new hatches to his own boat this week rather than out earning a crust.

Thanks. That makes sense. I’ll try again on Monday. Good guy Kev. He did a survey for me and sent me a very comprehensive report.

Hi
Surprise JP couldn't help you . Any way below are some info from others X4

Think from memory this was the process. First you must have a crew list, this form you get from the Port Police fill this in and then go to Customs with all boat papers insurance, passports etc you may also need your RYA certificate of competency. Here you get your Transit Log, was about 30 euros at the time. Then you take the Transit Log back to the Port Police and get it stamped. Good luck, have fun :)

Yes this is the process we followed also. They appreciate and some offices insist that the insurance is translated into Greek. Insurance companies active in the Med will be familiar and provide multi language translations. Also may need radio licence. We have our own crew list with all the usual headings. Often this accepted and stamped as simpler for everyone.

This is indeed the process for us, an NZ flagged boat, clearing in at multiple ports over the last 9 years.

The procedure Xxxxxxxxx outlined is what we've done 4 times in the last three years. Once in each of Kefalonia, Kos, Kastellorizo and Corfu. For us the best experience we had was just this past October in Corfu. The worst was Kefalonia. Our boat is Canadian registered and VAT paid. Corfu was the only place that knew how to process us properly, and finally gave us an unlimited/permanent transit log. And, they were courteous, friendly and attentive throughout the whole two-day process (VAT papers have to get confirmed at main customs office). They (jokingly) asked us not to tell anyone about our experience, and that they knew what they were doing, because they didn't want any extra business - so I didn't tell you!! :)

Guy next to us in Gouvia had the process explained to him by PP guy as he couldn't get his head around it. I do remember him being told to go to customs and pretty certain it involved a taxi ride. PP just rattled through the process and I assumed it was common practice (then I remembered we were now in Greece :D).

I was glad that our process was so simple and just a one stop deal (apart from quick trip to marina office next door to pay).

I'm back again looking for some more information, if anyone can help please. I'll be in lefkas/Preveza in mid February doing a bit of pre-planning for our trip April. I have a lot of gear from my ex boat but it's not really practical to bring stuff with me given the cost of extra baggage on flights and the bother of hauling it from Athens to Preveza. The guy I bought the boat from is/has taking all his tools off the boat so I will need basic tools for the trip such as screwdrivers, spanners, socket set, cordless drill, multi-meter. Is there a branch of Praktiker or any similar outlet in the area or anywhere you could recommend for tools? I will also need to buy a few sleeping bags, towels etc. Any suggestions welcome.
My boat is a 2003 model which was originally owned by a charter company for 3 years. The guy I bought it from acquired it in 2007 and he says there were no holding tanks fitted when he got it. He fitted a tank on the port side but the starboard head has no tank. Would anyone know someone reliable in the area I could talk to about fitting a tank for me before I launch in April?

Am sure some one will be along in a minute to give some info on your query but in the meantime have you considered leaving your set up as it is. For me it would be useful to have one toilet you can use for just number 1's. Means your holding tank in the other head would not get full up so quickly. You could always try it for a season to see how it goes, just a thought

I hear what you're saying but I'd rather not be flushing anything in a marina or anchorage and it's certainly more convenient to have separate heads for each cabin when I have guests. Added to that the Turkish Blue Card regulations are really strict now and with only 40L on the port side I'd need to be pumping almost every day to be sure a very fastidious TCG officer wouldn't throw the book at me. Even grey water is supposed to go in the tank here.

I believe that you are thinking of staying in Lefkada, in which case I would suggest your best location for buying tools would be Katisma. It is well know by the locals in the marina there as ‘B&Q’. It is about 1/2 mile straight out of the marina main gate, most people will be able to give detailed directions.

As firstaway said , B and Q as it's known will be you best bet , what they haven't got isn't worth having .
As for the black tanks , report from turkey suggested that the black tank thing is almost nonexistent , when we was there two years ago although we did get a blue card in the end after some chasing about to fine someone to sell us it ,
we only empty once in two months to show willing .
But yes I can understand what you say about staying on the right side of the law especially if your going to be based there .

Some Coast Guard officers are sticklers for checking the Blue Cards and most don't give a shit, if you'll pardon the pun. If you meet a stickler you don't want to be giving him an excuse because he will definitely make the most of the opportunity. So if anyone has a name to suggest in Lefkas or Preveza that I can talk to about getting a tank fitted before April I'd appreciate it.

I'm really grateful for all the information and advice I'm getting on here and I'll be happy to share any information which may be useful to others. My boat had a Swiss flag previously. It was on the hard in Preveza when I bought it. The owner had lodged the Transit Log with the customs in Preveza to stop the clock on the 18 month duration of the TL. I really don't know what will happen when I go to customs. You would thing logically they should just change the details [boat name, flag and owner] on the existing transit log. On the other hand they could decide to cancel the existing TL and issue a new 18 month TL or they might just give me a 1 month TL to enable me to take the boat out of the EU. I really have no idea what they'll do. They boat is staying on land until 02 April and I'm just going to try to get information when I go there in February. One way or the other I'll be happy to post up whatever I'm told.

After 20 plus year sailing in Greece you never know from one PP to the next what they want or what they going to say , your lucky in one way Prevea are use to dealing with yachtmens so are long as you don't end up with a officer who team lost last night or one that wife just kicked him out it's shouldn't be too much problem , although saying that we do know one couple who brought an ex vat boat and after nearly a year they given up trying to pay the VAT and now going to sail else where to pay it .

nicely sums up my experience over the last 50odd years :D
Doesn't apply to foreigners only btw, that's typical practice for everyone (natives included!)
just be soft, polite, understanding, ask lots of simple questions and you should be out unharmed, good luck!

cheers

V.

Thanks to everybody for all the help and advice. Another question. Will the customs and/or port police want to see the original Certificate of Registry for the boat or will they be happy with a good photocopy? My experience in Turkey and previously in Samos was that they are happy with a copy and even grateful if you can give them an A4 reduction as the original A3 size is a bit unwieldy.

I went to the customs office in Preveza on Friday and I was lucky to meet a very helpful young lady officer. I explained to her that I had bought the boat and re-registered it in Jersey. I told her I was planning to launch it at the beginning of April and take it to Turkey. First off she told me she would cancel the existing transit log and issue a new one but she wouldn’t be able to do it until the boat was back in the water and I had an invoice from the yard confirming the date of launch. She told me I could only get a one month transit log which would give me enough time to take the boat out of the EU as the boat is VAT not paid and I am an Irish citizen. I told her I was resident in Turkey and initially she was a bit dubious. I got the impression that she had encountered other EU citizens making similar claims in order to be able to keep their boats in Greece without paying the VAT. However after showing her paperwork proving my permanent residence in Turkey she was happy with that and said she would issue an 18 month transit log. I don’t actually need an 18 month transit log on this occasion and one month would have been enough for me but I wanted to see what process would be necessary to prove my Turkish residency and get the 18 month log. It wa all very straightforward and courteous and hopefully it will be the same when I go back in April. I hope to have everything sorted and be well on my way back to Turkey before officialdom go on a 4 day break for Easter on 6 April. Thanks again to everyone who offered advice on this thread.

Glad you got it all sorted , didn't sound very painful in the end , as I said in another posting , the pp in Prevaza are used to dealing with yachties and are normally on the ball, plus s they very good there when it comes to sorting something's that not the nor .
Safe journey back to turkey .
