Prep before trying to start a 2 stroke outboard that hasn't run for years.

Anything other making sure its not siezed, I should do to a 140hp Evinrude 2 stroke, that hasn't been run for years? (Dry stored), before trying to run it?

New plugs and fuel and the prop end in water to see whether the water pump works. I suspect that a new impeller will be required befor proper use.

Is it possible to clean the carb without having to remove it?

If fuel has gone off and dried to varnish in the bulb....probably not

You need a break down of the parts.

Or just try to start it (in water) and see how it goes before deciding on what potentially needs to be done. Obviously make sure the fuel is fresh with the appropriate 2 stroke oil mixed or separate depending on what the engine needs.

Daunting for a newcomer
But doable
It's not just a strip and re build and wipe with a rag or even just blowing through the jets and 'orifices'!
Take some pictures before and after and preferably get help from a Person who has done the job successfully before

This is the best advice yet, fresh fuel and go from there. If it shows good signs it's worth the effort and expense of going further.

I recently did this with a Yamaha 90 2 stroke, incredibly satisfying - good luck.

Don’t try starting until the leg is in water or has water cups on. Otherwise the vanes of the impeller if dry and stuck can be torn off

Thanks everyone.

Its a VRO engine that mixes its own oil, so I will plumb in a can of premix petrol to see if it runs. It's not ceased and the motor looks great now I've looked under the cover. No idea what's in the main fuel tank... probably a lot of condensation.

cups/muffs are due tomorrow so I will make sure it's got plenty of water going through it before I try firing it up...

Well she fired up today!

Smokey as hell but then there is a lot of oil going in - pre mixed petrol and what ever the VRO is putting in.

Pretty amazing really.

I think the water impellor is toast. With muffs on, no water is coming out the tell tail or exhaust so I only ran her for a few seconds.

Next stop, get the gearcase off and sort the water pump.

How are you getting on with this? My thoughts at this stage is that too much oil in the fuel is better than too little.

Well I have had a bit of a struggle with a siezed teleflex, which took a long time to get freed off, then I wasn't seeing any water at the tell tail when I put the muffs on, so decided to check the water pump.

Needless to say the gearcase wouldn't budge.



Eventually with some very careful application of wedges, it came off. The drive shaft splines were bone dry so very reluctant to slide out!



The water pump impeller looked ok to me, no cracks or missing vanes. Some sign of wear on the cup and plate faces. The water tube was quite crusty so I don't think it was sealing well at all.



I'm just waiting for a new pump to arrive before I re-assemble and test it.

If the water circulates ok, I'll fire it up again and see if runs reliably. Then I need to clear out the fuel tank.
