I have a pile mooring in the river Hamble at Swanwick, which is managed by Premier Marinas (used to be Moody’s) and I’ve just received (out of the blue) a supplementary demand for £500 for parking my tender. Has anyone else had one?

I’m prepared to accept that £500 might be a reasonable charge for mooring a dinghy on the Hamble but for 10 years it has been included and now suddenly it’s not.

We had the same thing with electricity during the winter lay-up. In all previous years it was included and then half way through the winter, new pug boxes with meters were installed and now we pay for usage at 10p per unit. As with dinghy parking, the rate on its own might be reasonable but it was included before.

I won't mention anything about half of the yard being redeveloped as housing and a "Pavilion" (whatever that is).

There are perhaps those who might think that Premier Marinas is just another amoral asset stripper but I wouldn't want for a moment to suggest that I am one and I at once distance myself from any such proposal. I couldn't possibly comment one way or the other but I am concerned that I am in danger of being a little cynical because I have a vested interest. What does the panel think?

What about we all club together, buy out the shares ( or at least 51% of them ) and operate the marinas on a break even basis.

As shareholders we would be happy to get 0% interest on our investment...

Or would we?

These are the guys that lifted my boat into the water, removing the roller reefing forestay and used the genoa halyard clipped on to the guard rails as temp forestay, set back some way from the pulpit so it would not interfere with travel hoist, and then left it like that, without as much as by your leve, knocking off at 4ish as Premier don't pay overtime!! Fortunately I checked the rig on my return but if not who would have been responsible for 16m of mast crashing down in marina? And all this for a mere £38.75 per day for 6 weeks - sorry Sir. we don't do monthly rates for visitors. How & why you guys stick it on the South Coast, is a complete mystery, unless you are all totally loaded. Now back on the East Coast for half the price - then off to the Baltic for half again.

I wouldn't dream of moaning about it. I was just observing that four months into the year (our contract year) PM has just put up my mooring charges by 35% on a take it or leave basis. It remains to be seen what happens ...

At the time of the takeover I did predict that would add developments to the site. In that thread I believe a number stated that they could not or would not!

Sorry to hear about your experience. I have always found the yard team to be reasonable guys. Perhaps they are not so happy with PM as an employer...

As for staying in the south, I live 20 minutes from the boat and a midweek evening out in the Solent is a delight. If I moved it somewhere else I wouldn't get half of the use that I do.

Like you, I thought that it was pretty much a certainty that PM would redevlop the site. You only have to look at the other marinas in the group to see that the image of a slightly scruffy and down at heel boatyard did not fit.

£500 might be a reasonable charge for mooring a dinghy /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

But there again, it may not. I paid not hugely more than that last year for a deep water swing in Portsmouth harbour for a 24 footer and was outraged when I got the bill 'cos it was up £100 from the previous year. This year, it's <£70 for a tidal club mooring (I do have to do my own maintenance) and a tenner for the dinghy store.

BTW That is per year, not per month or per week. As long as people are willing to pay, the barstewards will be willing to charge. It's called supply & demand. They aren't there 'cos they love you or want to promote boating...

Maybe it's time to make up a well known phrase or saying with the words feet and vote in it.

I don't may for dinghy storage, indeed I pay less than £500 for the mooring (April - October).

The point about the South Coast is a good one. We are equidistant in time between Essex and the Solent. I choose where we are because SWMBO loves the area. I do all I can to raise her interest as I figure it has better long term prospects than the steamroller approach.
