Dropped by on our way home from Brighton yesterday with a view to it being an option when we move.

It looked really nice - anyone know any different?

Comments would be welcome

We have been moored at Chichester Marina for 4 years and it is great place to have a boat.

Advantages

1. Very friendly marina staff and residents.
2. If it is rough you can still go out within the harbour.
3. Lots of rural walks.
4. You can park your car close to your mooring.

Disadvantages

1. The lock - you need to plan your trips around the tides and lock openings. Arrive back on a Sunday afternoon when there isn't a freeflow and you could wait 2 hours to get in.
2. Long way from Marina to the sea.

Have you thought of Littlehampton its a little cheaper than Chi, looking at the post above has 1, 2 you can go up the river, 3 pass, 4 the same. doesnt have a lock, it does have a bar over entrance so you are limited to usually around 3.5 hrs either side of high tide sometimes more dependant on level, 15mins from the sea.

good base to go places, you can do Brighton under a hour, solent just over the hour.

If there are any disadvantages I would say the river at 6 knt when you moor up can be a challenge, but it makes you a better boat handler once you have mastered it.

there are some good pubs locally who do good food so even if you stay on your boat at marina there are places to eat, the local pizza will deliver to your pontoon as well

Its worth a look anyway, there are also a few people living on site and they have a security guard on overnight, so its quite secure.

All in as marinas go there may be better but its ok, its good to go to nice places.

We are in Chi and love it. Really wouldn't want to be anywhere else (med excluded). As said above you just need to plan so you don't end up queuing for the lock. We've been there for 7 years, done over 800 hours on the boat and only had to queue for longer than 20 mins about a dozen times.

There are generally two free flows a day at weekends lasting anything up to 4 hours so either plan for freeflow or leave the marina friday night and come back during freeflow on Sunday or sunday night.

When coming back on Sunday we radio the marina when at east head and if there is a queue we anchor up for a while till it's gone.

It's not all plain sailing as we've had a two hour wait before but that was because a big boat had run aground in the channel leading up to the lock.

So the only down side is the lock but the beauty of the marina and the harbour easily outweigh that.

We have been in Chichester Marina since 2002.

We have thought variously about alternatives but keep coming back to the fact that we like Chichester very much.

I would endorse the comments above, particularly as to needing to plan with regard to the lock.

The only other thing I would add is that on passage through the harbour on a Saturday or Sunday there are usually a number of dinghy and day boat races to work your way through which can add to the charm of the surroundings or increase your stress levels depending on your point of view.

Would agree with all the posts, Depth does get down to around 1m at LWS last year their was a mud hump in the main harbour just after leaving the final approach channel post - I went ploughing a couple of times as the scour winds back and forth a bit. WAFIs and MOBOers also get along very well together in my exprience.
The pair of black swans will use Ronhilda's bathing platform as a roost/toilet but hey if thats all the comment I have things can't be that bad.

I certainly WOULDNT recommend Littlehampton...we are leaving this year and going to Chi, the customer service at Littlehampton isnt bad, its completely non-existent !
