We all know that 7x50 binoculars are optimal for use aboard.
However I recently inherited a fairly decent pair of 10x50s which I have given storage space aboard to this season. There are of course frequently times when the boat’s motion does not permit their use at sea, and I have to resort to the 7x50s which have remained aboard for that reason. However for use in calm conditions, particularly in rivers where I seem to spend a lot of time, the 10x50’s with nearly 50% greater magnification have proved a great asset. I can now read notices, admire the detail of other craft, confirm buoys, watch birds, seals etc, at much greater range and/or in much greater detail.
If any forumite has a powerful set of binoculars at home that they consider unsuitable for use afloat, I suggest they think again.
