Powered USB socket(s) feeded from onboard 24V circuit

thanks noelex, v.informative, I'll investigate further!

P.,
assuming you're not in a great hurry to fit them, give me some time and I'll find and test my farnell and ebay kit with the extra pin output that noelex suggests. Definitely easier than hacking and fitting extra usb ports.

yes, replaced everything on MiToS with Vimar IDEA as that's what I fitted at home and I really like them.
care to post a pic of one of your IDEAs please, what is the 24V socket you're using? 1U two pin one pin thicker than the other? If so, where is the V- and where's the V+ cause we had a discussion and different views with a friend!

cheers

V.

P, I didn't read all sugestions posted above, probably many good,

when I first read here on the forum about installing dedicated USB sockets, a few years ago, (posts from JTB and Vas iirc)
I thought it was a good idea, as You know also BA has many useless 24V DC sockets...
we might even have electronic components in my company (fe 7805 type of regulator)
but as you know, BA has all 230V sockets permanently active via invertor,
and standard usb chargers are so common and cheap,
I didn't want to have the hassle with the components, the cabling, reliably soldering and mounting of the sockets, etc...
just have several 230V USB chargers onboard.
moreover,
some years ago, we placed in every cabin a cheap of the shelf Sony clock radio with I'phone docking station.

sorry, no real answer to your question,

Definitely no hurry V, thanks in advance for letting us know about your findings!

Ref. the Vimar stuff that I've got onboard, sorry but I'm back home atm, and among the many pics of onboard equipment I just realized that I made none of the plates.
Anyhow, the version I've got everywhere onboard is the Idea Rondo', in the "Ardesia" colour/material.
The 24V module is the one below left - obviously polarized, as you can see, but the two pins are differently shaped, rather than sized.
And below right is the USB module I was thinking to use as a replacement, for those less familiar than yourself with these components... :)

Coming to think of it, yours is a very good point, B.
In fact, fitting a decent inverter is firmly in my upgrades list for next winter, and that will obviously feed all the AC sockets.
Still, it's a more elegant solution to swap the modules above, and convert directly from 24V DC to 5V DC, rather than 24V DC->220V AC->5V DC.
But other than that, you are right, in a sense I'm trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist... :nonchalance:

They are the same as MapisM's but my boat is 12v
LOL, I guessed that you might have some DC sockets similar to mine (regardless of the voltage, which obviously depends on the DC setup of the boat, and of the brand - be it Bticino, Vimar, or whatever).
In fact, they were very popular in IT boats (also BartW has them), but don't ask me why. I have never, ever seen anyone actually using one of those sockets... :ambivalence:

Just curious, but I would have thought which ever route you choose for good and safe effect a regulated USB output will be required given the very delicate PCB's in mobile devices. e.g. some of us without onboard charges or not in use may be unaware that charging will not occur if the USB output is not supplied from it's OWN smart charger or at least a regulated charger! I admit to not studying the specs of all the products linked in this thread.

I use these. They take 12v 24v and fit in the hole left by the cigarette lighter. Fitting takes 10 mins and most of that time is gaining access.

I don't have any cigarette lighter sockets on board and have the modular Vimar sockets everywhere - 1 side has 220v and the other has 24v. Plan is to swap out the 24v modules which are useless and put in their own USB charger module that just requires a power supply. Plan is to use a 24v - 5V dropper with USB socket - remove the socket and wire into the Vimar USB module.
