I am very interested in gaining powerboat work abroad. I am experienced, trained and qualified up to RYA Advanced Powerboat (including commercial licence) and also have RYA Personal Watercraft Cert., Diesel Engine and miscellaneous other qualifications.

Can anyone suggest where I could find job vacancies or information regarding tourist or commercial powerboat work overseas (eg. personal contacts, magazines, agencies, books, websites, companies etc)?

Any info, suggestions, help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Rob.

Antibes

There are lots of crewing agencies in Antibes. They supply crew to megayachts but also to 60footers ish and upwards. Dunno names, tcm might, becos he got his Emma at one.

Re: Antibes

No, what happens is that all the crew sign up at all the agencies, then walk around the boats, and find jobs. Then, the owner or possibly the auditor fires the skipper, but the skipper had a mate at one of the agencies but they didn't sign any agreement for fees and the same afternoon two other agencies send you the cv of the person who is due to start tomorrow anyway, and then all the agencies think that, really, you should pay them something and are a total git.

Best option for willing wannbies is to get the number of the Crew House in antibes, call in advance to stay there cheap every night. Work hard to look smart. Sign on at all the agencies. Walk the quays EARLY like 8 am, not 10, cos the nice jobs based in crew-friendly antibes go early, whereas the jobs for less-liked places like GJ or Monaco go to the agencies. Mix at the Blue Lady from 4pm. If possible always wear the same colour shirts so you're "the guy in the orange shirt". Put an ad in the blue lady pub, and in the Gaffe pub opposite. Don't wear baseball caps - they have to see a smile and short hair so you are presentable in crew shirt. You need no long trousers at all. Remember that you're in the leisure industry, not the powerboat-driving industry even if working on a large yacht, so smiles count. Have a mobile that works in france. Make the ad have little tear-off strips so lots can take your number. Ask for €3000 a month, settle for €2500 depending, to start. Listen and ask for lots of advice, cos some of it will be good. Help anyone you can in the street, for no money, cos some of the older scruffy gits will own very large boats. Offer to work for free for a day on boat you really fancy to see if they like you, or for half a day after lunch. Do not attempt to contact anyone except brits between 12.30 and 2pm.

good luck!
