Hi all

Went out of Poole on Saturday and just after the chain ferry heard a slight whinning noise coming from the engine bay so stayed at a steady pace and basically forgot about it as it quietened up. Set off from Cobbs Monday and only got to the bridge before i headed back. Noise was too great and i wasn't going to risk anything. Now, rather than spray duck oil everywhere, i started where the sound was originating from, the power steering flywheel in front of the resevoir. Sprayed a little onto that and it shut it,only to come back a few moments later.
Now its unlikely that this component can be broken down, so does anyone know where i maybe able to find a power steering pump.Would prefer aftermarket as cheaper or 2nd hand

Its for a 2000 year Mercruiser 5 ltr efi.

Cheers in advance for any help.
Simon

Sounds like its a noisey belt if you spray it and the sound goes away, is the power assistance is still ok then maybe the belts too slack and its slipping, remove the belt and check for any free play on the pulley, spin the pulley to see if its notchy as a bearing amybe starting to fail.

Cheers bud for reply.
Trouble is, the first time i sprayed the belt, the noise kind of went away for a few moments then came back. 2nd time i got the spray out, i only made sure i sprayed the centre of the pulley and it went away.
That's what's making me think its the pump.

Edit; Power assistance is ok.When i bought the boat earlier this year, the steering on first outing was lumpy, notchy.Turns out, no fluid in reservoir, filled up and run and okish except its always been slighlty notchy when turning, not smooth like a car.

Hi Simon.

I replaced the power steering pump on my 2000 5.0 efi last year. It wasn't providing much assistance and the steering was very jerky. I had a whining noise at around 2000 rpm.

I got a replacement from ebay. There are often mercruiser pumps listed and many engines seem to use the same pump. If you do decide to source a pump from somewhere like ebay make sure it has the correct pulley wheel fitted. I bought a brand new pulley wheel as the pump I got from ebay had the wrong one. I had a tough time getting them swapped over as they are a compression fit and really need special tools.

Since fitting the new pump the assistance is much better but there is still a bit of notchiness now and then. There is a slight amount of play on my rack helm which may be causing feedback to the piston to be affected. Could you have something similar?

regards
Dave

Hi Dave

Yes, that sounds exactly the same as my experience; at or just over 2000rpm comes the whining noise.
Not much on ebay at present and i really wanted to fix it this weekend.
Strange isn't it, all the websites i've looked at, sell every type of other pump, bar the power steering, doh !
