Hi Guys
As im new to this field would appreciate your advices and help. I noticed lately and not sure if it is normal or not that when OB ( 115 ) is idling in water and I increase RPMs ( not in gear ) the steering ( Cable not power )turns a half circle on its own to one side. Is it normal? Also during idling the OB shakes very very little which I think it is normal but im not sure. Also if I wish to change to Power steering does the OB need to be removed from the boat or not? Appreciate your kind help and info.

When you throttle up in neutral the outboard will move because of the increased exhaust 'thrust'
It will shake a bit on idle
Ref, 'changing to power steering' I presume the set up is-- Cable from the steering to a hydraulic ram at the engine end?

Outboards have a heavy flywheel spinning horizontally on the top of the engine and the crank shaft runs vertically.. That is a fair amount or spinning mass.. When you rev the engine it will be accelerating that mass and will have a tendancy to rotate the engine.. It will want to rotate in one direction on increasing the rpm and the other on decreasing the rpm.. Since the increase in RPM is likely to be a stronger force you will probably notice this more when revving up than when the revs fall naturally..

There are two types of hydraulic steering systems.... those that wok just like manual and allow the motor/rudder to turn the wheel and give you feedback when helping and the other sort that do not allow the motor/rudder to change the wheel position.... although these can feel "detached' when helming.

I have an elderly twin shaft boat.... each engine is 6 cylinder. When I blip the throttles from tick over the whole boat rotates about the axis of the crank shafts...... amazing amount of inertia/momentum.... (I forget which is which!!)

Dear Kawasaki

Thanks a lot for your help and reply. As you are aware im not technically inclined and do not understand steering systems but it is my pleasure to learn. However i rely on technical people but would like to understand what they are doing. To be quite honest all i know about the set up is that it is by cable. please find some pictures of the manual to help you understand more the set up i have. Would like to consider the advantages vs disadvantages of switching to a power steering system. Thanks a lot for your help and patience.View attachment 59024View attachment 59025View attachment 59026View attachment 59027
