I'm thinking a good quality power plane would be a nice Xmas present for swmbo to buy me.

I need it for planing, rebating, and bevelling. Any recommendations, warnings about particular models, please?

I notice that 82mm blade width seems to be standard. Is it possible to plane wider stock with this blade width or would I just end up with a series of 82mm wide grooves?

My Makita is 30 yrs old Pro use still good

Sorry I described that rather poorly.

The two seats came out of a 100mm roughsawn slab which was bandsawn for me to two pieces@ around 48mm x 300 x 1000.

Then I planed em fair, notched and trimmed em to fit in situ, belt sanded them and finally routed all the edges over.

Here's a piccy, sailing n all.

You can powerplane glued wood but it shortens the life of the blades ( eg if you were reclaiming some old thick decking).

Fwiw I prefer the lighter makita to its heavy chunky Elu predecessor but ask me again in 10 years...

Generally power planers are very good at removing a lot of material fast, but not that accurate and need finishing by hand plane.
My view exactly. Been using a Bosch for 10 yrs+ (off and on) - a bit savage, but worth it's weight in gold. TCT blades are worth the extra cost. I always use a Stanley hand plane for finishing.
