Power boats in rough weather

Most times the motor boats I've been out with in heavy weather have performed well but this summer I had an incident approaching the coast in a SE 6-7 . The waves turned
very steep and the boat began to roll real bad at one stage.
Obviously speed was too low and I shouldn't have been cought
sidewinds. - Anyway I lost one engine and the other was coughing jus in front of the rocky coast. I made it to harbour on one engine and expected to find dirt when opening the filters. The filters were clean however the only reason was air
in the fuel system. Tanks were abt. 1/3. The only explanation is that the fuel made 360 dgr saltomortal in the tanks allowing air into the system. - I've started to plan installation of a daytank which is always full.
