A pal of mine was unfortunate enough to pick one up at Porth Dinnlaen earlier this year, ended up having to give the fisherman £40 for the damage. Yes I know you'd all have told him to whistle for it, but easier said than done when you're surrounde by sweaty fisherman and boats bigger than yours!

The questions arise,

1. Can this not be reported to the Police as 'extorting money with menaces'?

2. If you declined to pay (after all it is their fault for setting a line and not marking it) and they (the sweaty fisherman) proceeded to damage the boat and attacked the crew, is that not Piracy?

That's a concerning tale from philiz, as always you think, what would I do... first thought was just pay up as I am all for the quiet life! But then I thought before I did that I would call the coast guard and give them my position, fishing boats name and explain to them exactly what was occurring... may still have to hand over £40 but I think it would make me feel better...and in the perfect world you would hope that a police car would be waiting for the fishing boat when he docks, although in reality that ain't ever going to happen!

You could say you don't have any cash and provide a cheque. . . then cancel it.

1. Maybe, but how interested would the local bobbies be in a report on the local fisherman?

2. To be honest, I'd have had to have declined to pay cos I hadn't got £40 on me! I was for telling 'em to piss off but understandably pal was concerened about repercussions as his boat was temporarily disabled and he couldn't just bugger off if things turned ugly. Piracy? not sure how much mileage there is in that in all reality.

Sort of
There are some horrid nasty harsoles that frequent that neck of the woods
Some more in various spots up here
Same as there is anywhere along our coastline
Probably on the dole and claiming stuff
Probably from a line of local Fishermen who used to do the job properly
A local Legit mate of mine has had his pots robbed recently
Just off Llanddwyn Island (NW Mob will know where I am talking about) by a 'crew' that sneak out of Caernarfon
These types are not real fishermen just scroungers and lazy terwats
There are a No of legit 'potters' about the area as in most places
Registered etc
Those terwats in Porth Dinllaen are not legal and do what they want
The Fisheries protection peeps an the MCA etc seem to pick on the wrong peeps sometimes
Sorry
Don't often RANT
Wished I,d a been there when Philiz's mate got tanngeld up
I,d have tangled the Gits with some Celtic swearwords
Like 'Offski yer Cants etc etc :(

i hear what you are saying K, reading the post initially I thought the meaning was proper full time salts, not just a bunch of chavs/bogans having randomly set a couple of pots, and looking for a reason to menace somebody.

Locally we tend to have a general respect for the pro fisho's, a little rough around the edges maybe, but always first to lend assistance and offer advice to cruising boaters.

As for the situation in question, how do you deal with (yob) confrontation anywhere, not given the benefit of hindsight.
Is it worth going the knuckle just for principle? that depends on the characters/emotions involved at that moment. Consequences can be dire.
