I've never actually seen who is responsible for laying mines around our shores but this morning I passed this handsome chap at a well-known trouble-spot. I was hoping that he didn't see me photographing him since he would probably have out-gunned me. I think that Colne Clipper was passing the other way, so no doubt he would have come to my rescue.

According to the government list of fishing boats under 10m the registration number of HH107 is called Elos and based in Harwich, registry of shipping and seamen number A17912, and licence number 20743.

This link needs to be opened using Excel and by sorting the Port letters and number provides the above information.

Unfortunately I cannot identify the boats owner.

However this description of fishing markers shows he is not following government guideline.

May be a complaint should be lodged with Marine Management Organisation. There is an office in Harwich. It is based at Miranda House, The Quay, Harwich CO12 3HH

I was only yesterday dodging what are probably those very same pot 'non-markers', and cursing the thoughtlessness of both the poor marking and that they're laid right in a route fairly heavily trafficked by small craft. (Perhaps he's a chum of whoever it is lays their pots along the recommended yacht track into Harwich/Felixstowe.)

The calm sea, sunshine, and your photo makes them look more visible than they are in reality: some are translucent, rather than white.

I'm not sure he is in contavention. My reading is that all that he is required to do is attach a label somewhere on his gear to indicate ownership. If so, it would appear the legislation is woefully inadequate.

This is the root of the problem, there is no requirement for him to use any particular type of buoy, only to attach a label to the pot. The first step is to have the rules changed. I'm sure our government would welcome this proposal right now as a bit of light relief ☺ ( and believe the Cruising Association are on to this).

Yes we passed that pot layer as he was going back toward Harwich the smell from the boat was interestingly, high. The pots that we dodged looked like they had been down for a while, we then came across a single pot with a marker of HH107 on a sticker! We were on high alert as we had picked up a large pot 5 miles west of long sand head whilst doing the Wivenhoe Ostende Rally 10 days ago. We thought that we had cut the buoy free but it was not until we arrived in Ostende that a wind farm boat pointed out that we towing something!!! ( see pic) Royal Ostend kindly put a diver down for us to take the pot off and check for damage, all at no charge. on the day that you spotted us we had just come back from Holland to Shotley, then Shotley to Brightingsea, and yes we would have helped if you had picked up a pot, we had quite an education in cutting our pot off in 2 meter seas and a stiff breeze!

We saw the same pots last Saturday, two pairs and a single (as if one had already caught a yacht). Really poor job on the fisherman’s part.

I've seen him a couple of times over the years, more usually between Frinton and Walton. Definitely didn't like the look of what he was doing.
Can this all be raised locally with someone?
