Re: Yacht Deliveries Constructive advice needed!

Brian,
looks like you are going to get PM s on this one.
Would you be good enough to tabulate and publish results on an average without giving away confidences, so the rest of us have a clue?
Cheers

Jim

Hah Hah - to quotes and whats paid ...

Pal of mine recently had a boat delivered cross channel - quote and final invoice do not relate to each other ... to be certain the Delivery guy involved will not be recc'd by him or his circle of pals which incl. myself ...

Name withheld for obvious reasons.

Point of the reply - Make sure the delivery quote / price is straight without any mucking around like this guy did ... I'm sorry to say he also posts on the forums and does not declare his true position ... he actually goes quiet when anyone gets close to it ... His MO is to PM anyone who posts on here and get "recruited" ...

It's a pity that I cannot for legal reasons actually say who it is ... but I think he will already recognise his MO ....

So please keep is fair and straight like most do and the world is an oyster ....

Is that like:

Trouble is .....

This guy is still plying his "trade" and raking off people ....

Enough before I say something that I'll regret !!!!

Re: Yacht Deliveries Constructive advice needed!

Ok so it was only a very short dely trip, but had to use a skipper coz I couldnt make down to boat.

Henry was recommended by a prolific forumite to do the job from Porto Solento.

Quoted a reasonable price, collected boat bang on time, took great care in foul weather, delivered it on time and helped load it.& generally did a perfect job.

Invoice exactly the same as quote.

Just a very satisfied customer.

Re: Trouble is .....

This in its self should be encouraging for fatipa, cos if someone as you describe can make a living at it then someone who plays it straight should get himself a good reputation.

Re: Yacht Deliveries Constructive advice needed!

last i heard on other threads hereabouts it was between £1.50 to £2 per mile plus expenses. Quite waht expenses are i dunno but i imagine fuel for mobo, and airflights regardless.

I wd imagine the important thing is to hook up with some nice brokers, who are in fact very wonderful people . Many delivery jobs must surely pass over their desks.

Re: Yacht Deliveries Constructive advice needed!

I think I'd approach this from a slightly different angle and go for something specialised like returning ARC boats to Europe, factoring in the cost of shipping the boat back to set my rates. I could sell on the advantages, eg that you don't need to get your boat to the pickup in Tortola by a certain date. This must prey on a lot of owners minds before doing the ARC

Perhaps also returning boats from the Med for brokerage?

Re: Yacht Deliveries Constructive advice needed!

Good call IMHO Tome..... lots of UK reg'd boats selling in the med for less than in the UK.... good marketing spin.... I'll bring back for £x, and the sale prices will be £x+1 higher... win win.... and if you get a good reputation, possible trips in the other direction too....

Sell on being different... and better service... eg daily update to owner, or clean and valet thrown in, or whatever works for you... lots of delivery guys do it through a love of sailing, and haven't thought at all about the business side of their job.... (not all I stress...)

Re: Yacht Deliveries Constructive advice needed!

Brian

I very possibly have an alternative for you. I am currently in negotiations with a crowd called GlobalTrack (also look at the link on my web site ), who are very successful in the aviation and trucking industry in satellite tracking systems. They are doing their best to enter the marine industry. If I am offered the position of Global Sales Director, I will be looking to appoint agents in the UK & Europe.

My pitch to them is to drop the price so that it is affordable to all yotties (Ok, and MoBos too) and thus sell thousands of units. We will also approach boats builders (unit supplied free of charge but they must sign their buyer up for a subscription), charter companies (where the feck is my boat), fishing fleets (can detect & report freezer temps so skipper cannot lie and say freezer stuffed = rotten fish overboard, when he's actually sold to his mate at the local fish market and pockerted the bucks himself at the cost of the fishing company).

If this sort of thing attracts you, email me from my website.

Regards

John

Re: Yacht Deliveries Constructive advice needed!

Beware - this is a very competitive market.
Quite a few "zero to hero" type YM youngsters are also trying on this lark. Most will work for as little as £75/day. Basically what they would get @ Sunsail.

I do about 4-5 deliveries a year. Don't advertise, all word of mouth.
Mainly for people new to sailing buying a boat in Holland, Belgium or France. Couple of brokers over there refer them to me. I charge £100day (+flight, food & drink, I also provide receipts for all incurred expenses), but as new owner sails with me most of the time, free own boat tuition thrown in.

Could do more, but I've got a real job to pay the bills.
Don't think I could live off the proceeds. But then again, like I said, I don't really advertise.

You will also find that a lot of sailing schools want a piece of this particular pie. One skipper and crew that pay for the privilege.

Very few people make a living out of this

Re: Yacht Deliveries Constructive advice needed!

What you say is true, there are a lot of peeps out there who think its would be fun etc, to work on delivery's etc, it can be sometimes. But and there always is a but like most things there are good and bad bits, There are a lot of peeps out there who will expect you to work long hours for peanuts if they can get away with it, some cut corners to the extent of being down right dangerous if they can. you could be asked to deliver a boat that has not been touched for years, literally and expected to have it in such and such a place at such and such a time regardless of weather, no one likes paying peeps to sit in a harbours and wait for the weather to clear.
Think it out and decide what you will do and will not, and don;r be scared to say NO to something that you know is dodgy unless they will play by your rules, this normally means them providing or getting a whole load of safety stuff.
Go in with your eyes open and you will be OK. I do not mean to sound negative, but its a hard lesson that has cost some there lives.

Which is why fatipa can charge a premium. Who wants to entrust their pride and joy to a youth with attitude, a YM fastrack and a dodgy 2-2 in media studies?

About the residential home

Does it make any money? and how long does your swmbo plan to hang on for? Sounds a better scam than the boat delivering and of course huge market from ageing forumites.
