Yes Brian,

You have a right to be angry. But only for the way they pulled it. The rules are there I'm afraid and in a monopoly they can do as they want.

I use ebay (100%) and pp but I try to cover their charges with carrage costs.

I am finding that I can now buy some things cheeper by googling to find other suppliers.

The current thing I object to on ebay is some traders stating that they will be adding VAT after the auction. This is the sort of thing that ebay should be sitting on.

I supose that in this day of finacially driven company culture you must grin and bear it.

Cover the charges with the postage cost.

I had my auction pulled recently because I had inadvertently put a phone in the mobile phones battery section but after complaining they pulled the fees & I re listed.

PP is a pain & I also resent paying the charges .........but I am afraid its now become common usage & if PP is not there then the users get suspicious.

Why are they not listed on UK's premier watersports auction site - SAILROOM??

eBay is just too powerful now. I read that an item of womans clothing sells every 6 seconds (surely not all down to Pauline /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif??).
Fraud is rife and has been going on for years and eBay seem to have a positive approach to this problem - this approach is to turn a blind eye to it. Gangs from the Eastern Bloc countries and China have an absolute field day. I challenged one such scammer a couple of years ago and he told me he was making in excess of £1000 a day (and I've just checked and he is still there using the same ID with similar items "for sale".)

I hate to say this but a previous poster might have it right. I reckon someone complained to ebay. It might well have been someone off the forum who was upset by you posting the sale on here. Someone here has got it in for you.
As for ebay they the most heavy handed godawful company to deal with and if you think they are bad you should try Paypal.

You will see that many sellers quote a very high postage cost which is always in addition to the agreed bid price.

Presumably wily sellers add in to that element the sort of thing which has caught you out?

how about advertising the "price " but offering 4%discount on other payment methods?

Our local Indian takeaway advertises "free Delivery" and 10%discount if you collect it yourself /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I find it extremely surprising that so many complain about the charges, the scams and e bay policies, yet few are looking beyond their noses. You are fools to believe that e bay is the only option and I am happy to see that the best alternative has already been mentioned, yet so many have simply ignored the fact that an alternative website set up here on this forum, with no listing fees and currently no charges at all, is ignored in prefference to a site that so many people complain about.
Isn't it time to stop complaining and vote with your feet, I believe Mr Steve Clayton has already mentioned the alternative, and others have hinted about it.

Ebay do have a de facto (near) monopoly on the auction market - there may be one or two sites specialising in niche areas of the market but I don't think there is anywhere that comes close to ebay in terms of the size and range.

As a seller you want to reach the widest market for your goods so you will go to ebay to list.

It is difficult to see where the challenge to that monopoly will come, and I think they will enjoy a dominant position in the market for at least another couple of years

If I read you right then E-bay have covered this one too.

Once an auction ends(or pulled?) it is impossible to send a message to any bidder as one quickly gets a load of bull**** back from E-bay telling of fraud protection methods etc which prevents the message being passed on to the bidder.

Even after buying something and satisfactorily concluding the deal I have had the need once or twice to consult with the seller via E-bay but have had the same treatment.

E-bay is simply there to screw out the max. in fees, there is no desire in my opinion, in providing any other service. They are now so big that disgruntled customers are of no concern or consequence to them

I'm allergic to PayPal, especially, and e-Bay by default.

I've had about 3 dodgy experiences (purchasing) and I know they're the conduit for more phishing attacks than the rest of the Internet put together.

The sight of either of those two ensures I abort the thread.

I don't think you have any right to be angry, as you have breached their terms and conditions. Did you know that they don't allow sellers to surcharge for Paypal? They could make their rules for sellers more obvious/easy to find. The far more common one is sellers claiming they are not responsible for items lost in the post, some charging a voluntary or even compulsory surcharge for 'insurance'. I am surprised your listings were removed, I thought they relied on other users to report things, why should anyone spot all your listings and report them?, so perhaps they do now have some method of finding listings themselves.
I searched last year for Microsoft Word software, and found loads of blatant copies being sold, looked again recently and they had all gone, so some vetting is obviously going on.

I agree with Bedouin, there is currently no alternative to eBay as an auction site, or even as a marketplace. Just in the UK it gets around 11 million visitors a month which is a staggering 40% of the UK internet population. More importantly for sailors it lists about 3000 boating items at any one time. No other site comes close.
I think the best alternative for trading used boat gear in a friendly and non-commercial atmosphere is the For Sale/ Wanted pages on this site. Although they don't use the auction system they do promote a bit of healthy haggling between buyer and seller so that both can feel they got a good deal. Unfortunately but understandably there has to be a limit on the value of the items offered, and no commercial element, so that the magazines aren't seen to be competing with their advertisers.
If there were viable alternatives to eBay I would certainly be using them. Not because I don't like eBay, they do a fantastic job when you consider the sheer volume of trade they handle, but because monopoly is never a good thing.

Instead of adding surcharge for paypal why not offer 'discount' on certain other forms of payment?
