Possibly no more mooring at Datchet unless we act

In my experience there is not enough depth at Datchet to float a flip flop in and hence it has fallen in to disuse years ago.
So unless someone spends the money to dredge it, I fail to see how it would be of any use to the average boater......
Same old story as many other places.

Yes,it is shallow at that mooring, once upon a time there was a slipway there but it has long gone.

datchet has never been welcoming to visiting boats, the road is noisy as are the aircraft.

would never stay on that mooring overnight,it suits the local cider drinking anglers, several boaters have said that they were kept awake by pis(s)catorial cursing.

Very good discussion but totally inaccurate. There are two jetties at Datchet which would be available for free mooring, if they weren't dilapidated and dangerous. The local parish Council has long neglected to maintain them. They're now proposing to do so, but also they mean to add a third jetty in the vicinity for big riverboats.
It is the proposal for the 3rd jetty that has caused objections in the local community. There's no real objection in the village to refurbishing the riverfront and existing jetties.

Have heard that that the regular parish council meeting on Monday evening was hijacked by protesters against the plans and had to be abandoned. Be interesting to hear what happens tonight !

Oh dear, I was at a meeting like that once. Really needed a strong and experienced Chairman. Joe Public can be a difficult bunch!

Couldn't go myself but have received a brief report of last nights meeting which lasted about two hours.

"Initially a very high proportion of the attendees were obviously “wound up” and against the proposals to refurbish the waterfront.
Datchet Parish Council put forward a very good photographic presentation to explain their plans.
Once the presentation was complete, Harry Clasper who said he represented the Datchet Village Society spoke. At this point several people said he DID NOT represent the DVS or their personal views.
He put forward his opposition to the proposals and this was followed by explanations from Kris Cruisers and French Bros and the PC.
Michael Shefras and Chris Turner spoke in favour of the plans and there was a lot of comment from the floor.
Karl Walters from Environment Agency, spoke about the regulations governing the work involved.
Unfortunately, overall there remained a lot of opposition from Datchet residents to the third jetty."

Would that be the commercial jetty for French Brothers?

It's always

difficult for an outsider to fully understand the issues surrounding these planning applications, so I hesitate to ask.

Hesitation over -
  • The area in question is right next to Kris Cruisers boatyard / hire base.
  • It's about 20% of the size of KCs frontage.
  • There three derelict jetties in place.
  • It's overlooked by some four or five houses
  • Between the houses and the River are several high trees
  • and a very busy main road,
  • the road and houses are at least 6ft higher than the river, so boats are unlikely to obstruct the view to any great extent.
So what's the problem; is it nimbyism or are they afraid that river users will visually and culturally pollute their environment?

This area is the only PUBLIC ACCESS point for miles, down river is private until the towpath topside of OLD WINDSOR lock.

upstream from datchet there is little access to the river bank for anglers and picnics etc.

the passenger boat interest will presumably be to ferry the olympic crowds to windsor, which takes 5 minutes by TRAIN and 45 minutes by BOAT.???

it would be better to make no changes at datchet,as mentioned before, it has never been a good mooring for leisure boaters.

have heard many tales of boats being molested on the CROWN moorings above and below datchet,it is simply not a nice area, that's all there is to it.

If only the Crown would allow us to use their immaculate frontage opposite Datchet!

The 2 reinstated and dredged public mooring would be great.

Commercial mooring - wouldn't want my moored boat too close to the French Brother cowboys. I suppose residents don't want their nocturnal clientele
loading and off loading either.
