Got a Furuno radar. I can't tell what model it is because I'd have to disconnect everything to get to the back of it but it must be at least 18 years old and has GaAa FET written on the front.

Anyways.....would it be possible to keep the original dome mounted on the mizzen and just change the set to a new digital one? If so are there any recommendations out there for budget sets (I know the word 'budget' doesn't normally apply to radar) and/or is it possible to keep the Furuno dome and use a different manufacturer's set?

Thanks in advance.

You'd need to ask a Furuno dealer to get a definitive answer, but I reckon it's highly unlikely that you'd be able to use a new Furuno display with your old Furuno radome. And you certainly wouldn't be able to use another make of display.

If you're looking for a simple budget radar, the Furuno 1623 is good value for around £750 in the UK. If you want to spend a bit more, the Koden MDP621 colour radar/plotter could be worth a look at around £1200.
