Did anyone see Posh Pawn last night (probably on catch-up if you didn't) where the guy living in Palma wants to sell his yacht (a Hanse 45 I think). He didn't seem to be an experienced a sailor to me so I wondered whether he employed a professional skipper but these things are all in the editing of course.

They took the boat out for a test sail and the pawn guy (definitely not a sailor) was quite happy on the helm until he said that he would go below to use the heads. The owner told him to go over the side (hopefully not a No. 2!) because if he went below he would get seasick. I said to SWMBO that it doesn't happen that quickly but the pawn guy came up green a few minutes later and started chundering.

As the owner said, not a good advert for the boat. He wanted E225k and the pawnbroker did his research and said that second hand prices for boats like that are on the up at the moment but perhaps that's just in Palma?

I won't tell you the final result! :D

I watched Posh Pawn and realised it was a Hanse. It certainly seemed to be moving a lot for the amount of waves, made worse by the RIB photo boat circling. It seemed to be a long time before they considered putting up the sails and even then it seemed to bounce. Definitely not a comfortable ride compared to older heavier displacement boats. I feel part of the "seasickness" was put on for the cameras, so do not believe he was that bad but made good television for non-sailors.

On the other hand it looked palatial inside, a real harbour living boat. It certainly looked clean and tidy, as you would expect from a newish yacht.

The offer he received was fair in the circumstances.

I did see it as it happens. It did seem odd that someone should want to engage a pawnbroker to sell a yacht and get involved with paying even more commission, but I think the sum settled on was more in the form of a loan than an agreed price for the boat. Although much of it was played up for TV, his nausea looked real! Not bad when motoring in a flat calm.

Sea sickness can come on incredibly quick. If you are feeling a bit off already and go below it can happen almost instantly I've seen it with a friend of mine. She went below to use the heads and immediately chucked up in it.

+1

The heads is about the worst, a confined space with no, or small, windows so no visual impression of movement.

Conversely, when you have gained your sea-legs and got used to the motion (both senses), using a toilet ashore is the best place to experience the rocking of stable buildings...

I watched this also......I assume the interest rate (not mentioned) is fairly hefty and that if he defaults the ownership of the boat would revert to the lender.

These boys make big money so they must fleece the desperate or unlucky
