Portway Yacht Sales

I have to say I am with Portway on this one. The boats are so different. they sail differently and are in another price bracket.

Given the low sales of Sunbeam, I believe that Dufour must have used it as an excuse to terminate.

I bought 2 new boats from Portway and have now got the same letter from Dufour. The wording does strongly imply that Dufour were dissatisfied with Portways after sales service.

After a Volvo Engine failure at 13 months old I would not buy another Dufour until they have Yanmar engines.

I can only add that the experince of buying from Portway was painless compared to buying a new Jeanneau from a UK dealer.

The French boats are OK its the UK dealers that let them down especially when they delete all the factory options that you order to fit them on the cheap themselves but still want to charge the factory prices.

I suspect that losing the Dufour dealership left Portway with premises and legal obligations leases etc that they could not sustain so they pulled the plug. As no one is screaming on here about lost deposits Portway appear to have behaved well compared to the Peters Opal fiasco.

I don't think so as they have been (trying) to sell Sunbeam yachts for about 6 years!!

From sources inside the Trade I am aware that Dufour staff visited the UK boat shows and were always seeking feedback on Portway. I surmise that the number of complaints received at the Factory were higher than was acceptable.

I think many are condescending to the French business man but working for a French company I hold them in high regard as they stupidly think long term, investments, manufacturing things and after sales service. The French will not accept that all manufacture must be done in China and that all the Europeans are good for is financial and service industries!!

Portway have outstanding invoices of ours, so did Opal. Opal never paid us, it'll be interesting to see if Portway pay. Anyway, that is always a business risk.

Having spoken to the administrators it seems that the manufacturers are attempting to step in to help, which is why there is not so much screaming. We will need to wait until we see how much agreements with Portway have actually been covered by manufacturers.

The administrator seems to be freely stating that there are no real assets (so I will assume this is safe to mention here), which is not so good news for creditors.

Unfortunately for me, my situation is worse than most because my biggest outstanding item is to do with Portway only. For those that can remember, my boat was damaged at SIBS and the hull paint repair was not satisfactory and was to be corrected by Portway. This is not a cheap fix, so this now leaves me with a new boat and botched paint job.

Is your claim against Portway or Portway's insurers who are, no doubt, still extant?

It may be that Portway didn't want to pass the claim to its insurers, but that doesn't mean that it can't passed to them. What do your insurers have to say?

Believe we saw you out & about the other day - unless there's another blue 850 around.

Thanks TK. That is actually a very good idea that I had not thought of.

Don't want to use my insurance company (why should I), so I'll need to chase down the insurance company that insured SIBS on Portway's behalf. No doubt this will require significant amount of chasing......again!

Yep, not only are we the only blue RM880, we are the only 880 in the country. Been doing a lot of singlehanding recently and tested out beaching in Bembridge last weekend.

The next RM880 arrives in August and will be silver. Fortunately it's owner is picking it up direct from the factory in La Rochelle, so has not been impacted.

Sorry to hear of your predicament - hope you get it sorted OK.

Interesting in the quote as it could be interpreted that Dufour pulled the plug due to perceived financial difficulties of Portway and are now assisting as Dufour don't want to repeat the Bavaria public relations debacle.

Apparently there are four buyers out there of which I am one who have deposits paid to Portway and acknowledged as received by Dufour.

If anyone knows one of these buyers please would they get them to leave a message on my mobile 07890 739445 and I will get back to them pdq. Might be to our benefit if we dealt with Dufour as a single body!

The individuals at BDO Stoy Hayward are promoted as specialists in buisness reconstruction so expect to see Porter (pere et fils) back as a Phoenix any day now!

Brokers are now telling me (they would now wouldn't they) that Dufour have been hawking the southern agency around for a year now so loss of the dealership cannot have been a surpise to Alan Porter.

happy days!
