Some years ago we ran into a swarm of many thousands out in mid Atlantic. "Looks like a party ship has been this way, tossing purple johnnies overboard", said SWMBO.

I scooped one up and put it in a bucket to inspect, then threw it back. It was nearly a month later that I took the same bucket out of the locker, and got a nasty sting off a long-dead tentacle.
