Portsmouth Sailing Clubs

in the OP's position, largely looking at clubs in Portsmouth for social reasons, I'd think Portchester is the best bet; it has a very good reputation and while Hardway is a brilliant club, with Portchester one has more chance of coming out to find the wheels still on the car, and quite a few more minutes on one's clock not wasted in traffic...

It's also a fair way from the sea. If you live inland you have to weigh up driving time against time to motor to the harbour entrance.
I think I have friends in just about every club in Portsmouth and Langstone Harbours, the clubs are what they are, join if you fit in.
You could also keep a boat in Pompey and join the Island or Cowes Corinthian, it works for some!

A fair point, it takes me an hour to sail - or to be honest, usually motor - to Chi' entrance; but offhand I can't think of anywhere different.

I have to interject here, I'm looking at a club for social and possible occasional stopover purposes and not really for mooring as I think I will be more than happy with the mooring I will have. Besides which - joining a club simply for a mooring seems a bit 'off' to me.

So in essence arriving at the club may well be more by water than by land :)

Portsmouth SC has a members' pontoon in the camber. All tide.
Portchester, has pontoons, mostly tidal AFAIK.
Hardway has pontoons.
There are other clubs like the Fareham Yacht and Motorboat Club or something like that, up the Fareham River.
There is ECA which has club buoys in the entrance to Langstone
There is the Royal Albert, which may still have some sort of deal with Haslar Marina? Is there a club of some sort on the Lightship these days?
The Royal Vic, Island and Cowes Corinthian IoW side.
If you want to do a bit of racing, Portsmouth SC does a spring and autumn series, which is a bit more low key than others!
There are other clubs, the above are what I'd guess to be the most relevant.

Another good point, our club is entirely run by volunteers, no paid staff.

Top Tip; if visiting over water, Wear Lifejackets and have a waterpoof VHF ! :)

There is a yacht club based in Haslar Marina on the lightship, but it's pretty much a social club for the berth holders, no racing although they do organise rallies, and it's open to both power and sail members.
