Portsmouth - Falmouth

Lyme Regis as a bolt hole, if doing a straight line crossing from Solent to Salcombe, is not a great deal of use. If you are hopping along from harbour to harbour, OK.

But a bit like Christchurch, needs to be used with some respect if conditions are not ideal.

Ok We went when meandering round coast and not in a big hurry. But I except for the uneducated and those unused to sitting on wet seats, a bit of a challenge. Lyme Bay is a cruising ground all of it's own> Not for wimps I'll admit. But Exmouth is sort of good enough for LOng John. OK Salcolmbe or Dartmouth much better. Heathen where you bin. Dont you know nothing about gods country!!

Lyme Bay is a holiday of it's own, as LongJohn has long been an advocate. I don't think even he would hold out many of the Lyme Bay harbours as safe havens or bolt holes if doing a quick hop across. I wouldn't even head north to Torquay unless desperate, as it's fuel supplies seem intermittent to say the least

Better if going offshore to W. Country, past St Albans, Portland, Start, to stay offshore, then angle in ?

interested in your comment to go through them.
the charts dont give you a clear idea of how big they will be but tidal charts give an impression.
will be taking STILL DUNNO (due to leave Sealine end of next week /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) round to Gt Yarmouth from Kings Lynn in June and there are loads of overfalls through and around Scroby.
would you recommend toatlly avoiding them or take a chance with a view to turning ound if they got really bad

Hmm. Well it rather depends on the weather and tides. Idealy go through them at slack water. But never with any amount of wind over tide. Wind with tide and not to much of it, should be OK. You dont want to get caught in bad overfalls though, there evil, like being in a washing machine. A good pilot book of the area should give local advise on them. If the seas dead flat anyway, they wont be a problem, but even in a F4 it can be like F9 in parts.

West Bay

It's a possible bolt hole but still wouldn't want to be there in a strong SE or E. All very attractively finished but can't really see the extra benefits to boat users.

I think you would be very lucky to get the flat calm sea state required for such a long trip in such a small boat without being very flexible on when you leave.

Re: West Bay

Thanks LJS. Might pop up there sometime this year and have a gander. I assume that there is more room now for visiting boats.

Brendan - yes, yes, ok, I know it is not a very convenient one if you're on the direct route from the Solent to S.Devon. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
