Miserable weather on sunday for start of challenge race off portsmouth so decided to drive/park and watch race start rather than motor out from our mooring, pretty windy-very wet and arrived near to start and found space to park car on road- pay and display-very reasonable 20p per hour perhaps 5 minutes walk tops from the view of the start under the starters cannons!

Dissapointed to see that Portsmouth council had opened an adjacent green area for carparking and were demanding £5 to park there- what a rip off mentality when "hosting" a major event - shame on them.

Good luck to all the challenge boats and Chay and his team - what a shame that Portsmouth councils support appeared to be focused on profiteering so blatantly.

I think I would prefer to regard it as both enterprising and accommodating. There was no obligation to provide additional parking facilities and there would inevitably have been additional costs associated with the provision of the facility. The additional parking did not in any way prevent you from selecting your alternative parking at a price you considered reasonable but you did have choice; something which others may well have appreciated. Well done Portsmouth City Council.

Re: disagree

um, £5 is steep from a public govt adminstering non-private land and way over the "costs" (what are they?) for parking on a green space. I went to the world cup a while back - no parking charges for opening the next door gold course as a car park . Not so good, imho.

I agree, Portsmouth are spending a lot of money on making the place nice, it was a quite a hole a few years ago but now its a city that all the residents should be very proud of despite the cockups with the tower.

Re: disagree

What is £5 these days? - two pints of bitter - a packet of cigarettes - a bit more than a gallon of petrol. There are both organisation and supervision costs associated with the provision of the additional facility and clear-up costs after the event - plus - once the decision has been made a) to provide the facility and b) to recover the costs the further cost of employing someone or two to collect the fees has to be covered. I shall continue to applaud Portsmouth City Council for their enterprise and public spirit.

Re: disagree

If you start applauding local councils you run the risk of investing them with an exaggerated impression of their own importance. On the whole they don't need your help with that.
