Just started work on this photography project here in Turkey but hope that it can run and run as we travel around the world. It's been great fun doing this project but it can be really intrusive getting up this close to the subject. I've only been able to do this because I know the subject - could be interesting asking complete strangers for their pic.

All pics here, plus an example, below.

Fantastic shots and a brilliant idea. Lived in Turkey in the late 1980's (Adana), and would have loved to have brought photographs back of Turkish friends, but then, many were still very shy about thier image being taken. It was almost taboo to take photographs of strangers. Looking forward to the next installment.

That's an interesting question. The style of these images doesn't lend itself to women very well. As you can see the overall look is 'craggy and weathered' and I'm not sure the women sailors here would appreciate the end result. Some of my male subjects weren't too impressed with their look either!

That said, I put these photographs on display here yesterday and got a great response. I had a conversation with one woman about doing a female sailor collection, who jokingly said I should try and make them like fashion shoots (heavy airbrushing and soft-lens). I'm keen to do this, but I need to decide on my theme.
