Hello
I am thinking of buying a boat to use in costa del sol area. I have looked at a number of different boats and I think I will go for a 2003/2004 Sunseeker Portofino 46 or a Gobbi Atlantis 47. They have the same engine configuration but I have no idea of which one is the best choice.
Any opinions?

Hi Petimeter amd Welcome!

Funnily enough I have been looking at two of the same boats and looked at a Refurbed SS(Sunseeker) 46 (2004) refurbed yesterday. Here is my opinion. Obvious difference is the High Low swim platform Vs the Tender Garage. I prefer the High low as it has more options for use. Atlantis has therefore a smaller swim platform, a larger sunpad, but less cockpit seating. Sunseeker also has higher topsides as well so will roll more (very rolly yesterday). For Med use both are great but I prefer the SS layout with more seating, less sunpad and high low platform. Down below the layout is very similar with two cabins/two heads. However the SS has higher headroom and feels slightly larger. The Atlantis though has a better level of finish and the Atlantis rear cabin wins for me.

The engine room is much bigger on the SS and access easier. That means easier maintenance and lots of space. Atlantis feels a lot more cramped and the tender drips seawater onto engines so engines look worse. SS is slightly more dated in design, Atlantis is more classic.

The refurbed one I looked at yesterday (used to be my neighbour in QQ Marina so knew her well) has been refurbed within an inch of her life. Black hull in Awlgrip, new cream cockpit seating, new black hoods, full GRP tidy up and polish, new HI/Low platform motor etc. and looks amazing.

Feel free to ask more, I have never owned one but have looked closely at both. However in this Price range my choice would still be an Absolute 45.....But SS comes a close second.

Interesting point of view, but I agree with what Nautorius said. The tender garage leak in the Atlantis 47 should be easy to fix I think if one gets its hand on it.

I think the win lose here is if you want a full beam owners cabin, or a high low bathing platform. If you sort that priority you can decide between these two boats.

The Absolute 45 is a great boat, she is an evolution of the Gobbi 425 SC but a bit better. I like that the Absolute has no bow platform i.e. nose, had the passarelle that goes in, but then I prefare the looks radar arch of the Gobbi. The Absolute 45 is also a drier ride, to the Gobbi but this is aparently created by the vacuum the large bimini creates. Have a similar problem with my 335 SC, altough with a bit of trimming the ride is much drier.
Anyways comparing a stern drive boat to a shaft one feels never right to me since consumption will vary to a minimum 50% of extra so speaking of the Absolute may be you should consider this.

One thing to add is IMO both the Sunseeker 46 Portofino and Atlantis 47 are just ok with the 480hp Volvo engines with about 30 knots top speed loaded in the Med. Yes 31/32 knots are possible but that would be a fairly empty boat.
I know that newer models 2006 onwards have the 575hp units which give both models like 3 - 4 knots more in performance and about the same levels in consumptions at a cruise of 24-25. Still the problem here is that both 36 Portofino and Atlantis add value to resale with the larger engines so they are just more expensive to buy used. But it is a tip I wanted to give.

Anyways good luck with the search.
